the answer to the title question has to be a resounding no.. given the way the governor and senate elections in california are headed...i cannot possibly imagine anyone voting meg whitman for governor and at the same time voting to legalize marijuana...furthermore..tom campbell (or fiorina/devore) in the US senate will no doubt push for federal legislation that will require anyone that gets caught with a spliff in their mouth to be summarily declared a terrorist and disappeared as such...

marijuana legalization has gained a political foothold at various times in the past too.. then as now..the dreaded silent majority responded swiftly and brutally at the ballot box...

illinois is not holding a referendum on legalizing marijuana...but like CA..IL is also electing a governor and a senator this fall.. and like CA..IL the polls are also lurching to the right...

with even liberal states like CA and IL voting for repugnincan jackboots.. the only conclusion that can be drawn is that america will be well on its way to becoming a hard-core police state come november.. and we will prolly be there in 2012...and it is of course ludicrous to think that such a society could legalize marijuana.. in fact just talking about it could land your ass in guantanamo...

through all your political mumbo-jumbo and examples you fail to realize that legalizing cannabis is a bi-partisan issue, it isn't just the left that wants this shit legalized, it doesn't matter where you fall in the political spectrum, rule by ignorance can only keep the majority at bay for so long before EVERYONE, left and right, realizes that prohibition is failing, and that the system needs repairs, add in some fiscal and economic advantages and a recessive economy and BAM you've got history in the making, a la cannabis legalization.

you are mainly just speculating and throwing out weak examples....without recognizing the benefits to legalization versus the disadvantages...yes there are still puritan types out there that think even tobacco should be made illegal, but the vast majority "the silent majority" is starting to wake up on this issue.....Dr Phil and "the doctors" and Rachel Ray can only fool stay at home moms for so long.......

I say that pot wont be legalized simply because it would show a fissure of weakness in the drug schedule system (as if anyone with a brain couldn't see its sheer studpidity already). All of a sudden some ass would come forward with some stuff about cocaine or heroin helping certain diseases or something. Plus if marijuana became legal the government would be admitting they were wrong, they dont do that... and all their senseless propaganda and money spent on squelching pot use will be admitted as wasted.

If it does pass, I will be looking for every reason I can to move out there.  Not LA tho, that place is a shit hole.  I voted yes.  I hope all you californians out there are spreading the word to get this done.

I don't know why you are trying to scare people on this site that can't read through your crap into thinking that this bill won't pass just because the governors election is leaning right according to the polls.  Well the polls could change, and this is a bi partisan issue.

And, o yea, that's right, the polls also show majority support for this bill!  56% of responders said they would vote yes on it.  Hmm...so even though 56% of people said they would vote yes on it you say the majority will vote no on it because apparently the conservative governor is winning in the polls right now?

I can't believe you would actually believe what you are saying, and I have sneaking suspicion that you don't want the bill to pass because you would lose some personal advantages.

even if the voter doesnt see it as a partisan issue..the candidates that shes' voting for see it very much as a partisan issue...a vote for whitman or campbell is necessarily a vote against marijuana.. even if the same voter votes to legalize marijuana on the referendum...

intuitively..however..one still expects that such split votes would be rare in practice...

rule by ignorance can only keep the majority at bay for so long

judging by the success of sarah palin and the teabagger movement.. so long may be a very long time indeed...

Quote:
before EVERYONE, left and right, realizes that prohibition [along with the rest of the repug agenda] is failing, and that the system needs repairs

if they ever do come to that realization..it will most likely be far too late for them to do anything about it...once the govt the teabaggers have in mind is elected to office..it cannot simply be elected out...

the economy is recovering quickly...im not complaining about that.. but it will severely weaken the financial incentive to legalize marijuana...

Quote:
you are mainly just speculating and throwing out weak examples....without recognizing the benefits to legalization versus the disadvantages...

and since when does a rational discussion of benefits vs disadvantages ever figure into partisan elections??...

Are you saying that keeping drugs like Heroin and Cocaine illegal is at all a better idea? I could point to any number of studies that have proven the opposite, but that would be a waste of energy.

see my earlier response..above.. the candidates still see it as a partisan issue..even if the voters dont...BTW..its not only the governor..but the senate election too...

if im not mistaken..that poll was taken in 2009.. which would make it worthless today...but suppose your right and the majority does split the vote...in that case..the political vote still outweighs the referendum...

Do you guys really think they will legalize marijuana, after they just outlawed "clove cigarettes"?

What do you mean the political vote outweighs the referendum?  If majority vote yes on the referendum and conservatives also take office then the referendum is rendered null?  This referendum gets approved as long as a majority of voters vote for it, it can't be denied because of who is in office.

Yes. And watch people turn out in record numbers to vote.

It's pretty much the only thing that can save California's economy at this point.

What the fucking hell are you talking about? Schwag doesn't even exist in California.

It's already practically legal, the only difference is you can't buy it at 7-11.
