Who has been to Japan?
    #12403240 -

I'd love to go but:

a) don't speak a jot of the language
b) don't have a clue about the nuances of their culture.

I just like what I see.

Discuss.

Japan is a lot nicer than China.  You can drink the water, half the people speak english, the food is better (I think, anyhow)...

I agree. I'd obviously love to see the cities but I'd love to get out there, go visit Okinawa etc - not as sparse as Tibet of course!

Speaking of Japan, can anyone recommend any good films? I'm thinking Lost in Translation...

Ya, if you don't like cities you probably won't like Japan.  There's very little space that isn't covered.

I was young when I lived there, too young to be super interested in women, but I hear Japanese women LOVE American men.  That could make the trip worth it in and of itself

I spent a few weeks living in Yokohama with a host family.

they spoke English though, and the son was always with my friend and I to help us get around (I don't know Japanese besides a few phrases)

it might be difficult getting around without knowing Japanese and without having a guide

I know this is borderline pathetic but I love the idea of dropping some L, turning up at the airport and just booking a trip to Japan.

I know it's not that sensible really but I just love the idea of diving into something (With a little chemical courage  ). I'm normally quite a reserved type but I dunno...as I've gotten a bit older (and perhaps confident) I really like the idea of diving in at the deep end.

How are the Japanese generally? I know it's pretty impossible to speak so generally but where I come from there's some really nasty types. I don't like that.

Generally respectful and reserved, really hospitable people actually.

there are a lot of unspoken rules of etiquette though, you should try to follow them if you want to return respect (which will get you a long way)

check out some books and read up on Japanese society before traveling there for sure

Yeah I've read that the Japanese are big on customs/etiquette and i'd have no problem trying to respect that. In some ways I think it's actually pretty cool having convictions in ones social etiquette.

If an English speaking guy turned up there randomly would it be an impossible  uphill battle or a fun learning curve?

I wouldn't recommend going with zero preparations.  At the VERY LEAST you should make hotel bookings in advance.

I'm going to Japan this fall or next spring.
From what I understand, most people there know the basics of Engrish... they have to take it in high school. And there is plenty of American people living there.
But don't go there expecting everyone to speak it to you. Learn at least the basics of Japanese language at the very least, it will go a loooong way.
You'd probably be very frustrated if you expected everyone to be able to understand your English.
And yeah, there are tons of unwritten rules of etiquette that you should become familiar with before you go.. you don't want to unintentionally disrespect people.

I lived in Sapporo for two years, and recently came back to avoid the Olympics in BC, and crashing at my GF's at the moment.

Pros:  Sapporo is a lot like van/pdx as it is mountains and oceans, the
snowboarding is amazingly cheap and it pukes snow.
Drinking can be cheap, and there are no open container laws, so
you can drink anywhere, plus they have something called
nomihodai's:  translated to all you can drink, so you pay for a
time, usually 2hrs will set you back 12-15$.  The girls are
cute, and there isn't that christian attitude toward sex, as
well many of them have a "gaijin fantasy"

Cons:  here in Hokkaido, not as many people can speak english, so
doing the most menial thing can be difficult, but Japanese
people generally do try to help you out if they can, as every
japanese person has to study english for 6 years, however it is
for a test not to speak.  Eating out can get expensive, since
it viewed as such an event.

I'm sure there are much more pros/cons.  These are what just jumps out at me.

Japan is cool, if you do travel, bring lots of cash as this is very much a cash society, and look into the JR visitor pass if you will be going to a few cites, as traveling within the country is really expensive.
