I'm in Japan
    #11870623 -

I'm in Japan for the week for a business meeting.  It's my first time out of the U.S. (not counting Canada).  It's fucking sweet so far, but I'm coming home on Saturday.  Is there anything I should do here before I leave?  What's unique an different that I won't get a chance to do anywhere else?  I'm in Kobe, btw.

Lucky!

Let's see youve got anime, capsule hotels, pockey, pantie vending machines, the rave scene, the psych scene (psychs are actually easier to get than pot there and pot is absurdly expensive), iced coffee in vending machines, sake, karaoke bars, shinto shrines, mt fuji, mushroom hunting, and I dunno what else...Id be so overwhelmed.

well unfortunatly, most of my time here has been work.  we didn't arrive till very late sunday night.  monday, we spend touring kyoto - the nijo-jo castle and a few temples.  we ate sushi in a very authentic restaraunt and drank plenty of saki.  the company we're here for took us out for a very traditional japanese dinner with like 11 courses ranging from jellyfish to Kobe beef.  work will be winding down tomorrow, so I'm looking to see some more of the night life/counter-culture scene (if one exists here) before coming back.

I know there are lots of underground raves. Id look for hip youth with dyed hair and ripped jeans, those punk/raver looking kids and ask them.

check out the Japanese shit bars; the girls go on specil diets, then poop on a plate and you eat it.  You get to pick from a menu describing what diets the girls have been on.  They poop rightin front of you, on a plate, then give you a fork.  Konichiwa.

haha, fuck the eating part, but i'd definatly go and do that.  i'd pretty much do anything new and different.  hey did you guys know you can drink wherever you want here?  me and my buddy were walking on the streets of Kyoto and they were selling booze at vendors.  we were just walking around drinking.  and then on the train ride back, too.  it seems we were the only ones, though.  everyone else here is so quiet and tame.

Are you sure you can drink wherever you want then? Or the people are allowed to but dont?

I know in some eastern countries they sell growlers of beer in bags with a straw.

I'd like confirmation on whether hokkaido has an active head scene or not. I hear the northern island has more pot. I love pot, I wonder how difficult it is to obtain for personal use only and how safe the would be.

Ive heard that nugs in japan are 30 bucks a gram at MINIMUM due to scarcity and high demand.

i wouldn't know where to look for drugs here.  the city is so clean and everyone is so quiet and tame.  they don't even want to make eye contact with you.  it's not the jap way.  the scene is fucking incredible, tho.  from my hotel i can see the mountains, an incredible city skyline with cars zipping down the double decker freeway, and then the ocean all sandwiched together.

The concept of losing "face" or whatever it's equivolent is in japan (family honor and shit) keeps them acting pretty submissive & nonconfrontational

yeah, we asked about the booze and ppl gave us weird looks as if to say 'duh'.  i asked one of the guys we met with here at the company and he verified it.  we actully bought the booze outside fo a temple.  he said they're not very religious.  we went and drank our beers up in a cemetary then.  believe it or not, the cemetary had the best damn view in the entire city.  i guess they save the best for the dead.

Hmm...maybe since no one thinks to do it its just not a problem.

Ive heard that in Japan it is actually considered inappropriate and aggressive to look strangers in the eyes.

Yeah, prolonged eye contact is considered rude by Japanese people. It's true, you can get beer in vending machines outside and publicly drink. Same with cigs. In some areas the drinking age is really low. You MUST try mochi. They're delicious treats made from rice dough and sweet beans you can't find hardly anywhere in the US. Go to a themed restaurant, walk around the shopping district and take it all in, buy something weird from a vending machine, hike up Mt. Fuji, take a boat ride, go to an on-sen (public hot spring), go hiking, and find some weird Japanese porn and buy it.

Re: I'm in Japan [Re: Dynoo]

Well, I'm now back from Japan as of last night.  After finishing up our work on Friday, I decided to go out and explore.  There was supposedly this great place to see live music called Chicken George which I went searching for around 10 PM.  I drank a few beers walking around and ended up running into a prostitute.  She tried to lure me in, bringing down this younger girl and asking if I wanted a 'massage'.  When I saw the young girl come down in fishnet stalkings, knee-high boots and her tits hanging out, I figured what 'massage' meant.  They were pretty forceful, but I managed to communicate 'no' to them and take off.

I stopped in a convenient store and checked out some Japanese porno mags and then asked for directions to the bar.  My Japanese was poor and his English was bad, so I still couldn't find the place.  I ended up walking in this really small bar and the people were really friendly.  It was tough trying to communicate with them, but the one guy spoke a little English.  They bought me some drinks and gave me some weird shit to eat.  After the bar closed down, the one guy I met asked me to come to his buddy's bar.  I did and we played guitar and drank there for a while.  I meant a bunch more people there and one guy gave me a tea cup that he had made as a gift.  I was out of yen and nobody took cards, so they paid for all my shit.

They asked me if I liked Karaoke, so I said yes.  The bartender shut the bar down and a group of 10 of us went to this place that was like a hotel, but in the rooms, it was a karaoke setup with couches and tables.  We got a room and did karaoke for a few hours.  I talked to a bunch of them as best I could despite the language barrier.  We finished up at 6:30 AM and they ended up paying for the room.  They're very friendly people.  The one guy even offered to pay for my cab back to my hotel, but I told him I could just take the train.  I got another beer out of the vending machine and walked back to my hotel drunk as shit and just in time to make the trip to the airport for my flight.

I think I pissed off my colleagues cuz they called the local hospital thinking I was dead when they woke up and saw I wasn't there.  Turns out our flight was delayed anyway, so i got to sleep till it left.  Then I woke up so hungover I could barely stand, which probably looked pretty unprofessional, haha.  The lady at the ticket counter was lucky I didn't puke on her.  Then we boarded the plane and I yakked a few times in the barf bags and slept the rest of the booze off.

All in all, a superb ending to my first real trip outside of the US.  I'd highly recommend traveling to Japan to anyone.  The culture is very different than the US and the people there are some of the friendliest I've ever seen.
