if you got kids around, kill it. as harsh as it seems they can be very dangerous. i would not take any chances and let it live.

i never kill harmless spiders on my cacti thought. i know which ones will help me and which ones will harm me.

then again i have a 3 year old to look out for.

ferrell.  widows are very poisonous, but not that dangerous.  they are clumsy as fuck off their webs, which are always hidden in teh dark.  always good to be careful with kids around...but they are much less harmful than peopel imagine.  that and they have very tiny fangs arranged pretty awkwardly on them for biting people.  its actually very difficult to get bit, and if you do there is little venom so you have time to get to the doc.  but small kids liek you say you need to be careful.

the pics above, they got the red belly, or an all black variety?

I work in their environment all the time. I do a lot of home inspections and have to crawl through their webs under homes.
I have done this for two years and never got bit. There not out to get you. I worry more about getting bit by ticks or flees, and there is some red on its belly.

Most black widow bites do not require any kind of medical attention, most result in less than a small red ring that stays there for a week or so and disappears.

Don't kill spiders! they kill the nasties!

Whoa, I've never seen a black widow except in photos. I try not to kill the spiders but man they give me the fantods.  :aliceshocker:

Those mofos get everywhere. I haven't had to deal with them too often since I moved to the second floor, but they're still extremely common. Especially if you know where to look for them (anywhere between the ground and your knee in pretty much everywhere)

Black widows scare the shit out of me. Nice pictures though.

I've seen 2 huge brown recluses, one huge banana spider. (I don't know what it called, but man it looks so cool, definitely poisonous).

I've also had a black widow in my house. And yes I did kill it. It obviously came from a little family of these fuckers that were right outside my house, beside my front porch. Was about 4 of them I believe.

I don't play around, no poisonous spiders are going to be in my house. I practically have arachnaphobia, so I'm a spider killer. If it's outside I'll let it live, inside, it's gonna die!

Just remember, the little fuckers eat there babies if they have to! They are evil!

Black widows may be one of the most deadly spiders out there but I'm not freaked out by them in any way, I'm freaked out more by spiders that aren't necessarily venomous to humans than those that are.

Erm, no they dont require medical attention, they require a call to the morgue. WTF? The female black widow bite is more deadly than many poisonous snake bites.

Dont give advise if you dont know what you are talking about!

There is a bunch of widows around in where I live. I have never spotted a female though, but the one in those pictures sure looks like a female.

Nice cacti by the way!

Yeah black widow bites a very nasty, but its very rare that someone gets bitten because black widows just aren't that aggressive or are too clumsy. If you get bit though you're fucked if you don't see a doctor.

Well you already know me, I'm fascinated to the point that I will put my life at great risk by capturing the fuckers and observing them.

Still got that brown recluse, waiting to stumble across one of these guys or something equally as deadly and having it battle it out with the brown recluse.

some things that should be pointed out.  black widows are not as DEADLY as people seem to think.  they are VERY poisonous, but the fact is they dont have a lot of venom to give.  if you have ever seen them milked you will see that.

many snakes are far more deadly, but not as poisonous...its  a simple volume that makes the difference.

there are SO many animals that will eat their babies if hungry, in fact i would think the species that dont (and are not herbivours) are a great minority.  when i was breeding western black widows i found the moms to be exceptional parents, far more so than other spiders.  they even share food.  but survival is survival and starvation is serious.

i am far more scared of recluse/violin type spiders than any widow simply because of their chance of a bite.

but if you do managed to get tagged, DO go to a doctor...why would anyone suggest not to go to a doctor.  just cause they have less frequency in bites, they do happen, and when they do move to the doc fast.  they are deadly, especially to kids....they cause respiratory failure which can be bad for already fuggered people.

anyway, i think the thing to remember is they are real slow off their web and not that fast on it.  so just look where your going.  there are far more dangerous animals, and more people die from bee/wasp stings.  if ya do get bit though, put a cold something that isnt freezing and apply pressure and move to the hospital quick but not rushed and panicking.  try to relax.

fair enough.  i just can't comprehend people getting pleasure in it and wanting to do it in the meanest possible way.  squish it quickly and discard of it, no need to torture the poor thing....and being evil just boggles me...is this what the bible teaches now?

Haha bible. I wouldn't know because I'm an atheist.

I'm sorry your sensitive towards insects, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Especially since half of my post was a JOKE. I said I will kill them, only if they are around my house. I never said anything about 'torturing' them, not that I would ever feel bad over a dumb insect.

And yes, I still think anything that would eat it's own baby obviously is pretty fucked up. You can defend the little devils all you want.

My grandmother was bitten by a black widow. It sent her to the hospital, made her quite sick. So excuse me if I don't let a colony of black widows fucking breed right on my front porch thank you.
