Re: fuck... i wish i had a sleeping bag. [Re: AnonymousRabbit]

i'm looking forward to portugal.  it's supposed to be cheap and fun.  and i've got a couch to crash on for about a week in the northern part near some great national parks.  after that, i'll head down towards lisbon or porto and see if i can stay around there for another week.  then maybe some helpx farmwork.

that should take me to the end of april or beginning of march, at which point i'll work into italy and eventually greece where i'll meet a buddy from back home.  together he and i will travel another 5 weeks or so.  then i guess i go home.  oooor... i see if i can find a job under the table in the UK.  we'll see.

i was also thinking about finishing out my trip with a bang.  i've been told of people hitchhiking on freightliner ships across oceans.  maybe i can find one to work/hitch on from the UK to america.  it'd take like 3 weeks or so, but it'd definitely be an interesting experience.

I personally would love to do the freightliner thing, i've heard of it but never known anyone whose succeeded (or even tried.)

I would like to hear more about your wwoofing/helpx experiences and some stories about couchsurfing. These are 2 things i've been meaning to do for years and have yet to get around to... hopefully hit up a wwoof or 2 this summer!

Thanks for sharing T_R_B - i am glad you got a sleeping bag. I would never go somewhere without a place to stay, without one!

What's a wwoof? After I'm done with education, hitchhiking/backpacking/whatever sounds like a sick idea, especially that freighter thing.

tiny rabid birds, you are an inspiration sir. I just read this thread and I must say I think that's fucking badass what you're doing. It's something I've always wanted to experience, and reading your updates is very entertaining. I just don't think hitchhiking around America would be nearly as cool as Europe.
I will stay tuned to this thread.

Wwoof is "willing workers on organic farms"

It is a well established international volunteer program that links all sorts of organic farms with volunteers from around the world who want to learn and gain experience in all manner of farming.

Everything from large scale farms to small mom and pop  operations. Everything from cattle, sheep, potatoes and permaculture plus everything in between. The terms differ from farm to farm - but generally it is something like 30 hours a week work in exchange for room and board + shared responsibilities around the house (cooking + cleaning.)

Usually a 2 week stay minimum and upto 6 months+ in special circumstances.

HelpX.com is the same thing.

Personally, I've couchsurfed dozens of times, mostly in the US though a few times abroad. The best feature of that organization is the quality of the people who are on the site. Despite being total strangers, the folks I've stayed with have always been super nice and interesting individuals. Last time I was surfing in Vancouver my host introduced me to other people who were willing to host me, so I was able to jump around from place to place effortlessly. Another great aspect of couchsurfing is because the people are local, it plugs you into the hidden gems of city instantly, without getting stuck on the same fucking tourist trail with a lonely planet in your face the whole time.

The trick to being hosted, in my opinion, is appearing very independent and self-sufficient. If you seem desperate and drained of your excitement, unless you are networking the emergency couches, no one wants a stranger looking to recuperate.

I've also hosted a few times, and I love surprising the travelers with free pizza and beer. I'll also drive them around the city some on the weekend -- with only a few bucks and a few hours you have the chance to really impact someone's life in a positive way, especially if it is a big international trip for them.

Update 3 4/8:
okay.  i've gotta be quick because i need to go do some laundry shortly.  but i'd like to let you guys in on my adventures as of late and add some pictures.

i'm in portugal now after about 2 weeks of hitchhiking through spain and southern france.  the day before we made it to france, we got a ride from this nice old brazilian dude from outside of valencia all the way to girona, north of barcelona.  we get into girona rather late and he invites us over to meet his family and have a free hot meal.  fuck yes.  then, after meeting the family, his wife says they should offer us a place to stay for the night.  free hot meal AND and warm bed to sleep in?  shit yes bitches.  amazing luck.

then at another point whilst hitching from toulouse, france back towards portugal, we get picked up by this cool old british dude.  he can only take us a few kilometers, but he too offers to allow us to crash at his place.  he was a really fucking cool old guy who was a teenager in the heyday of the sixties.  he told us all these stories about taking acid at awesome old festivals and concerts and whatnot.

and then when we get to his house, it's in this tiny village community of maybe 10 houses and it's sitting on a ridge with the most amazing view of the pyranees mtns and gorgeous & lush surrounding landscape.  too fucking perfect.

to cap it all off, the last ride we got took us over 400km straight to portugal, rolling at speeds topping 200km/h (125mph).  it was a really nice couple and the ride was surprisingly smooth and soundless for such speeds.  ironically enough, we weren't able to hitch the last 90km from one portuguese town to the one we wanted to go to. we ended up having to take a bus.  haha.

pictures!

also, i've added all my updates into the first post for easier viewing.

im hoping that my post about hitchhiking is what inspired you to do this.

hitchhiking is probably one of the most ground-leveling and eye opening experiences of my entire life.

just so you know:
signs don't help, they actually LIMIT your possibilities, because if someone is willing to pick you up they will pick you up REGARDLESS of where you are going. if you have a sign, someone who is only going a small distance will opt to not give you a ride since you are requesting a ride the entire way to your destination.

just sayin, i found that i get less rides when I have a sign, than when im just using my thumb.
(could possibly be different in europe, just something ive encountered in america)

also:
a lot of older hoboes and shit will try to tell you whats up about hitchhiking and bumming around, dont listen. just go with your heart, go with your instinct, fuck every1 else. most of the time its just bullshit, just them trying to wank off the last bit of pride they still have left within themselves (their "hobo" pride) but they are just trying to make themselves seem wize or knowledgable

other than that, thats all the advice i have (and all the advice that you need) other than that, just go with instinct and enjoy the trip. peace.

i use signs strategically and not exclusively.  like if i'm on a stretch of highway between two big cities, chances are that most cars will be going to the big city i want to go to, so i use a sign.  however, if i'm on smaller roads or just asking for rides, i don't use one.  and towards the end, i was using my giant cardboard thumb more than signs with city names.

dude.

one thing that i HAVE to say is this:

NEVER turn down a ride. you do not know how long it will be till you get another ride. trust me. this may seem like "hobo bullshit" but trust me its much better to be ONE EXIT down the road, than at your current spot..........

trust me.you can get fucked over hardcore, by turning down rides, especially close to night, its happened so many times to me b4 its not even funny. just take that next ride (and avoid a midnight bust by a cop......trust me)

I hitchhiked for years using signs, and use them almost exclusively when going long distances. Usually a ride will say "im only going so far, but it's closer than where you are now," when they can't take you the whole way.

Makes me want to hitch. I'm sure it's much cheaper than a month long railpass like we bought.

i totally disagree.  i keep a road map and i think strategically.  i consider how hard it is to hitch in that area, the sort of place they'd drop me off at, etc.  i don't often turn down rides, but sometimes you have to.  you don't want to get left in a place you know you'd have a shit of a time trying to get your next ride.

Ive been let off at some pretty shitty stops.  No rides for three days.  If I would have stayed put i would have had more rescources like ample h2o.  Good thing I have a water filter.
I turn down rides too.  And yes signs dont really work in the US.  Nobody even cares to read it.

You are really inspiring me to do something similar. My friend who's graduating this May is trying to work in Singapore or Thailand, somewhere in that area of the world. Possibly a hostel or something. I told her I was going to visit her and make her get me a job for like a month before leaving and making my way back across towards Europe. I'll hafta take some boats but, we'll see.

Regardless, this is inspiration to do something. Only worries I have are student loans that would need to be paid while I'm gone and things of that nature.

that's what forebearances are for, brah.  i owe almost 20 grand in student loans but i said "fuck it" and put them all off.  you're only young once, amirite?  in my humble opinion, the cost of putting off my loans for a year are totally worth the reward of experiences and adventures i've been garnering in my travels.
