Processor problems
    #12319755 -

I just want my computer to work correctly. Please help me.

Months ago the power input jack needed to be replaced on my Dell inspiron 1520. Thje guy who replaced it gave me a new power supply. I think he gave me one my computer is incompatable with. It will run the comp, but it almost always fails to charge the battery. I went in BIOS and found out the error message for such things have been turned off. I turned it back on and low and behold, there pops up an error message telling me the computer will adjust some settings to make it work.

So anyways, here comes he clusterfuck. Recently my HD crashed. Before this (I still had this fucked up power supply) My Core 2 Duo processor rated in the 4's. After installing the new HD, it rates a 2.2 and my computer is slower at many tasks. HELP

The Windows Experience Index rates your HDD and video cards, etc. separately and the base score it shows you is the lowest out of all the subscores. Your old HDD was probably better than your new one. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/experience-index.aspx

Could be a couple different things. Maybe he used shitty drivers (or omitted to install a few). If he didnt install an power interface driver that could effect CPU functionality. If your HDD physically failed and had to be replaced, it is possible the new one is slower then the one you had before.

- Install the proper drivers for esp. the mainboard chipset and the video adapter.
- Check the power requirements of your laptop and see if the new power supply matches them. If not, replace with proper power supply.
- The story about the BIOS error message is rather vague; without a specific error, it's impossible to tell if it's significant. Probably not, though.

One thing is certain: there's absolutely nothing wrong with the processor itself.

I run win 7 and after the clean install it updated all the drivers. I'm not sure if it updated the main chipset. I'll check into that and see if it helps.

The error message that comes up specifically says that it is going to adjust power settings. I can turn the message back on if it helps with new info.

The new HD scores better than the old one in the experience rating, I doubt that's the problem.

I'll look at the chipset stuff and try and see if I can get a handle on this. Thanks bunches for helping me out.

Check it out frith.

I went into the device manager and there is an unrecognized device. It's location is PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3

Here's the related drivers under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers:

Ricoh MMC Host Controller - PCI bus 3, device 1, function 2

Ricoh xD-picture card holder - PCI bus 3, device 1, function 4

Under IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers:

Ricoh 1394 OHCI Complaint Host Controller - PCI bus 3, device 1, function 0

Under SD Host adapters:

SDA Standard Complaint host controller - PCI bus 3, device 1, function 1

Under system devices it tells me the PCI bus is working properly.

I'm going to look up info on this so called PCI bus and what the third function is supposed to do. Hopefully that will help. If not, hopefully this info may tell one of you what I need to do.

heres a tip..

when i used to do pc repair i downloaded and burned all the drivers from here:
http://driverpacks.net/driverpacks/latest

download them all, extract the files, burn them all to a dvd, let windows search the disc for the appropriate driver. it will install automatically.

you now have a driver master disc that should work with any computer.

Thanks bro, I appreciate it a lot. I'm going to go ahead and download this and see if it works. I can just mount it via power iso correct? Also, since windows doesn't recognize the device, hopefully that won't be a problem.

Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes.

One of the symptoms of my problem is that when I download files through my web browser, when it verifies, it takes forever. I've been waiting basically since my last post for a 128 MB file to verify.

:kingcrankey:

I don't think I can wait this much downloading out

can you try another browser? no need to really verify it..

also, you cant really mount it with any of those type of applications unless you create an iso file/image.

i like to have a physical disc around just incase something happens to another machine.

I've seen hardware run in a "safe mode" so to speak when wires were loose on my motherboard and voltages were screwy.  The CPU dropped from 2.8ghz to 1.6ghz for example.  Easiest thing to do would be to 1) flash & update your bios and 2) reset to default settings and go from there.

I found out what driver I'm missing, but I'm having a bitch of a time finding it without being charged. It's:

Ricoh Memory Stick Host Controller

Anyone know where I can find this? I've tried Ricoh.com, dell.com, and simply searching, and I'm coming up empty.

Ricoh driver download from Dell

This one is unlikely to give the performance issues btw. Are you sure the latest & greatest video driver was installed? It's either Intel GM or NVidia, depending on the exact type of laptop. You can get the one you need right here

This took me less than 1 minute to find using Google btw.

Yeah, I found it too. I need the 64 bit version. I've even e-mailed ricoh and dell and neither one seems interested in getting it to me.

I found a family member today with the correct dell power supply and low and behold, all symptoms are gone. Looks like I need to order the same supply that is known to destroy the power input jack, which has already happened to me and is why I have the power supply that fucks my computer up.

I'm fucking done with Dell though after they wouldn't find me the 64 bit version of this driver. :snub:

1) Your battery is most likely old, and wore out, especially if you have had it for any length of time. If your power supply, supplies power, and your batter is not charging, it is your battery at fault.

2) As mentioned above, your slow PC is due to a driver problem. When you install a new hard drive, it means it is blank and you have to load the operating system(Windows) and drivers yourself. Windows will often load some generic drivers to make your computer usable until you install the correct drivers which allows your computer to take advantage of whatever hardware you have to the fullest extent.

3) Ricoh driver link

Thanks for the links, but dude, I plug my power supply in, problem. I plug in my dad's Dell power supply, certified for my computer, no problem.

Later on in the day, the faulty power supply completely failed. The led won't even light up.

I did need the ricoh driver though. Dell's support pages are the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to navigate.

Well, your power supply was obviously faulty  If it had been normal circumstances, and your power supply worked but battery did not hold a charge, it would be your battery.

NP man, I'm pretty good at scrounging shit up on google.

Is you computer also faster again with your dad's power supply? I think laptop CPUs clock down to save power. Not enough power may cause your battery to not charge and an always clocked down CPU.

Re: Processor problems [Re: Annom]
    #12332984 -

Yes. It's great. The battery started charging up right away and everything.

The only problem is that the correct power supply was designed just a tad too small and over time it wiggles and breaks the input jack.

Which costs me lots of money. Last time, I bought the input jack myself, thinking I could install it, but I can't find solder wicks anywhere. Instead of $15, the bastard who gave me the shitty power supply charged me nearly $200 to put a new one on.

I'm pissed at Dell, the repair guy, and myself for not knowing shit about computers when I ordered a Dell. For the money I shelled out, I coulda built a pretty decent tower by todays standards, and that was '07!

:kingcrankey:

Seriously, my laptop has had more problems than any other thing I have ever had.
