Re: Weird habits of yours [Re: ]

I have a strange habit that I can't seem to break. No one thinks its weird though, because no one knows about it. Until now, that is.

I've been doing it for as long as I can remember. I don't remember exactly when or how it began, however. I don't know the psychological motivation behind it either, it might be a benign form of ocd. But when I ride in cars, I put slight pressure on the bottoms of my shoes with my toes based on the pattern of the road markings on either side.

For example, on a two-lane road in america there is a solid stripe on the right side of the car, so the toes of my right foot will be putting steady pressure on the bottom of the inside of my shoe, one long push. On the road on the left side of the vehicle there is a dashed line with breaks, so the toes of my left foot will be putting repeated abbreviated pressure on the bottom of the inside of the shoe, push push push, as long as the line remains broken.

Intersections get a similar treatment, with a long pause in the pressure on both feet.

On freeways the rules change slightly; the dashed lines get the repeated toe-pressure in the spaces where the line is not there, as opposed to when it is.

Sometimes the rules change up based on the conditions. Sometimes instead of road markings I use cars as a basis for the toe pressure, somtimes light poles and telephone poles. When I go downtown I find that I use people for it.

This is an almost subconscious activity, as I rarely pay attention to it, but it happens pretty consistantly. It happens while I am interacting with other people in the car and doing whatever else people do while they are riding in cars. I have no explanation for it, but am secure in the fact that it at least is not hurting me or other people.

Gee thanks dee_N_ae...
Did a search for Bettie Page.
Now there's 2 of us with fetishes.

I could be in here all day spouting wierd habits, so I'll just leave this:

I Have to have pockets, otherwise I can't go anywhere.
I need to carry certain things ON me, and if I can't, I can't leave the house.
-keys
-lighter
-smokes
-cell phone
-wallet
(pipe, torch lighter, weed, mints, gum, etc...)
So I have a HUGE winter jacket with lots of pockets, and ALL my pants have 8+ pockets in them, otherwise I can't wear them in the summer.
I've already gone through one cell phone by landing on it skateboarding.  Not to mention the key stabbings.
Even in grade school, when I wore sweats (didn't wanna wear jeans till about grade 6), my mom had to make them so that they would have pockets.

Now that I think about it, I've carried either matches or a lighter ever since I was 5.

Maybe I should buy a purse!  A MAN-PURSE!  Anyone know where to get one, or what they look like?  (since I currently have no GF, I want something that will assert my HETEROsexuality =)

I find myself talking to myself, about talking to myself about talking to myself..sounds like it doesnt make sence but it does! haha.

also, no matter what kind of job i have, for my break I never venture into the break room. Not sure why, I guess sitting in my car with my music is better then the radio and people I work with.

I also talk to myself like you do.  And mister black, I also did things like that all the time.  Nobody talks about that stuff, I'm glad I'm not alone.  I am sure I have a lot of other weird habbits, and I am glad I can't think of them off the top of my head.
And great post!

Thats wierd I got a lot of the same things as you guys. I hate germs to the point of not eating anything unless I open it myself, I no longer use re-usable dinner plates, the ones you got to stick in the dish washer, I use the paper plates and plastic utensils. I can only sleep when its real cold, and it is hard for me to get to sleep unless Stimpy is sleeping with me.

 HOly shit! I do something very very similar.. and have been doing it for as long as I can remember.. since a child.. while riding in a car, I will use my feet to "jump" over telephone poles and signs on the right side of the road. Like push my left toes down first and then the right toes in order to "jump" over the object. I started doing it with the lines too at one point.. woah... that's too weird. It's half subconscious for me as well.. I'm aware that I'm doing it but I'm not really you know.

Mine are all similar to what some ppl have already posted:

Have to sleep with a blanket, no matter how hot it is.

Can't sleep with socks on & have to have my feet out of the blanket.

I not only talk to myself, I sometimes have full 2 sided conversations with myself as if I am 2 different people talking with 2 completely different views or opinions about things!

Mister Black--

I have a simular habit... but I know where mine originated

When I was a kid I had to ride the bus to and from school. I was the last person on my route, so in the afternoon I rode for an hour. Anyway, to keep my mind occupied I would pretend that I was controlling some type of mowing machine connected to the sides of the bus, the machine was down when there was a grassy ditch, but it had to come up over driveways and other raods. It started by just putting a small amount of pressure in my fingertips, but somehow evolved to putting pressure on my teeth... like if the machine needs to be down I lock my jaw a little on that side then relax when it needed to be up, I can even control both sides of my mouth to work the machine-even if one side needs to be down and the other up... I still catch my self doing it.

and on freeways and highways and such when there's not really any grass, I also do the dotted line thing, but I still use my jaw.

Hmmmm...

LOL Indigo!!

All this talk about riding in cars reminded me of something I used to do when I was younger....
Whenever I was doing anything and got bored, like if I started gazing around at the environment, I would start to imagine a little humanoid character jumping from object to object.
From the counter top to coffee grinder, onto the refridgerator and across the top of the door frame, down to the floor and then up onto a wall outlet, always running and jumping....it was pretty cool   I think I played too many video games...

Re: Weird habits of yours [Re: ]

I guess I have a few weird habits. Most of them were already mentioned which would lead me to believe that they are not werid at all, but actually common.

I tend to make specifc modifications to lighters before I use them. I'm extremely specific in the way I smoke pot. I always go through the exact same processes, give or take a few minor details, when I smoke.

My eating and sleeping habits are BADLY out of whack as well. I too, go for days without sleep sometimes. In fact, I find that easier than sleep it self. After a few days of not sleeping, I find it extremely hard to put myself to sleep again. Conclusion: Sleep is for the week minded.....or the other way around.....meh....

I always try not to walk on cracks in sidewalks too. I think that's more just out of habit than superstition though.

I also do that compassion thing that Meph talked about. It's hard to explain or even understand, but I know exatcly what he's talking about.

My morning routine follows a strict pattern. The first hour of my mornings has been almost exactly the same for the last 10 years. That could turn into something bad I would imagine. Maybe it's time for a change.

I also hit the Esc key when windows 9x is loading. The actual system details are far more entertaining than that stupid logo.

I also cannot stand book jackets! They drive me freakin insane~!

I've got tons of other weird habits like this. But I wouldn't really call any of these "weird". People simply like having patterns in their lives that are different from other people's.
