Is this weird?

When I was much, much younger I genderized the alphabet and the numbers 0-9. I don't know why, or how, this came about but for some reason I saw male or female qualities in each of these characters and classified them  as such. I won't go through the whole alphabet but I'll give you a few examples:

Female:
A, B, H, K, M, N, P, R, S,... 4, 5, 7 (5 and 7 were always 'manly' or 'butch' girl numbers in my mind)

Male:
C, D, E, F, G, I, J... 1, 2, 3, 6...

I don't know if it had to do with names associated with each of these letters or something else. With numbers I can't fathom where it came from. Sesame Street, perhaps?

Anyways, do you find this weird? Have you ever experienced anything like this? Are my drunken ramblings annoying? :shrug:

i couldnt help but notice the letters "P", "M", and "S" were listed as female.

could this be thinly veiled sexism?

freud would probably attribute it to you secreting craving your mother's...well, you know.

i habitually count the steps i take between sidewalk cracks. ive done it for as long as i can remember. similar phenomenon i suppose, but probably more common...

I do do that one. And I also have a bad habit of counting telephone poles while driving.

perhaps. lots of children's books personify letters and numbers to help the child identify with the symbols.

if you notice you'll see that especially the letter S is associated with a kind of female quality that comes with words such as Seductive, Salacious, Sweet, Sexy, etc.

as with I on the other hand, just by looking at the letter it becomes obvious that it is a phallic symbol.

yes it's even possible that you associate the letters with men and women you have met in your lifetime.

it's difficult to pin it all down to one origin. the unconscious is a very powerful thing.

So true. But this happened at a very young age, around kindergarten, where I had very little understanding of the world. I know it was some sort of subconscious conclusion but I just find it odd because I've never encountered somebody that has assigned a gender to every letter and single-digit number as I have.

you are diving off the deep end of language origins, symbolism, psychology, and anthropology.

im sure somewhere in some university, extensive studies have been done on this, and if you were adequately curious, research would pay off

interesting though, arouses curiosity.

I never genderized the alphabet but I do OCD-ish stuff like that.  I'm always orienting my feet in certain places so that they line up with nearby walls, desks, etc.  I think it's a side-effect of my chosen career. :frown:

You'll be happy to know you're not alone. I did that as a kid, too. But I know why I did it, and it wasn't my imagination creating sexes. When I was in kindergarten, we had a letter we studied each week. At the beginning of the week we'd go "find" the letter somewhere in the school (like in some hallway, the gym, out by the swings, etc), and it was a big cardboard character. Some were male, some were female, and we stared at that cardboard cut-out all week long. We also had videos that showed the letters interacting. I don't think it was solely based on vowel/female /consinent(sp?)/male.. but I do recall that Y was strangely asexual.

So my sexual alphabet was created by my schooling. Yours is just freudian. :wink:

I also have always done that damn sidewalk step-counting. I never wanted to step on the lines, because that would involve fractioning a portion of my step into two slabs. So, I would go out of my way and overstep my normal stride to get my foot completely in the next slab if my normal stride would have put my foot on the line.

Sad that I can tell you that my stride as a 3rd grader almost always allowed for 2 steps in a slab followed by 3 in the next, at least on the sidewalks in the locale I lived in then. Walking to and from school every day imprints odd things in your memory...

Gotta love OCD quirks. When I was little, it used to be that I couldn't go anywhere unless both of my shoes were tied with the same amount of pressure... otherwise, it would drive me crazy if my right shoe was tied tighter than the left, or vice-versa...

So glad I grew out of all of that.

haha I used to do both of those things too. Also, for YEARS I was convinced that if I thought of something before it might happen (like, a dog might come out of a house), then it wouldn't happen. Despite constant evidence that I was wrong, I held onto the belief. Finally I grew out of it sometime early in junior high. Being a kid was weird.

Here's weird:

Whenever I go to a place that has lots of people in it like bars, concerts, malls, etc. the first thing I do when entering is survey the area and devise an exit plan just in case some shit goes down. Also, I spot something handy close by in case I need to grab a weapon of sorts to protect myself in case shit really does go down.
