Do words ever randomly seem weird to you?
    #3816991 -

It happens to me, all of a sudden a word will just seem weird. Like it just all of a sudden seems to sound weird, and/or the spelling seems funny. Just happened to me with the word zero. I typed it and was looking at it and thought it was a weird word. I was looking at the spelling and it seemed odd. Now I'm looking at it and it no longer seems weird, this happens with me from time to time. How about you?

Yes, that happens to me.

Usually it ends up looking like the spelling is funny in my brain.

Yeah, sometimes I will be writing something and then think its a funny word, but then be not sure if I am spelling it correctly.

Yeah it does happen. The words which every now and then seems strange to me are usually simple words like dwell and bubble.

If i think of a word over and over in my mind asking "what the fuck has this word got to do with its meaning?"

.. It soon looses its meaning and i never use it again lol.

It happens to me all the time, it usually happens with 1 or 2 syllable words like "out" or "loud"

I love the part in Black Sheep (or is it Tommy Boy?) when Chris Farley and David Spade are high on nitrous and they're like "limit, that's one of those weird words! limit... limit! limit!"

hell ya, all the time. you can make it happen willingly if you try.
IMO () this happens when somehow you make a disconnection in your brain between the word itself (which is a label) and the meaning that the language has given to the word.

zero just doesn't mean zero anymore. zero is a word made up of letters, and zero is the number that comes before 1, its really void, nothingness.

this has got everything to do with the shroom experience and spirituality  :mushroom2:

It's because the english language has more exceptions than it does rules, so spelling is more about memorization than anything.

That happens to me. If I just keep looking at or thinking of a word over and over it eventually makes no sense.

Wrong. there is no exception or rule concerning the word "zero". and besides it happens to me in french.

So true. The whole "I before E except after C" thing always throws me off. Its a bullshit rule that breaks itself. I still spell those words wrong. Like 'wield' is correct 'wierd' is not! WTF!

My statement is far from wrong. Spelling in english is more about memorization than anything.

'i' before 'e' except after 'c', for example.

"thier" (is a name) and "concieve" but then there is "height" and "their" (the word). Hmmm.

yes, because by doing this, there occurs a separation between the word you're reading and its actual meaning.  :tongue2:

Mushrooms always make me think of weird words that I'm not sure even exist, like justibles or oynge (like orange). Those two come up almost every time i trip. Don't ask me to make sense of it.

"I before E ecxept after C" is the stupidest thing they teach us in english. We quoted two seperate examples of common words that do not hold up to that rule!
Height
Weird

There's lots; from alt.usage.english's FAQ, an excerpt of the "I before E" thing.

English makes it easy for words to appear "weird" or mispell (it's misspell, and they both look weird if you ask me).

come on, do you really think that the privilege of having a word seem weird to you is reserved to english speaking people? hello no! haha, so arrogant of you to think that! jk

the english language is awesome though, but personally i prefere the french.

No, you put words in my mouth.  I did not disinclude any other language, I just put forth a reason as to why it might be so with English.  [note, I saw the jk]
