Yin and Yang
    #12321063 -

Do you find this to be a useful way of approaching the world?
To see it as a whole that becomes divided into two opposing forces by consciousness?
And that no matter how hard we try to make the world only one way, cracks from its opposite slip through?

If so, I found this brief statement from Jung rather interesting...
"Matter therefore would contain the seed of spirit and spirit the seed of matter."

The materialist will never be able to make the world fit completely, for the seed of the spirit will always intrude into their perfect yang.
And the mystic will never be able to make the spirit become the entirety of their existence, for the seed of matter will always intrude into their perfect yin.

Do you think this is true? Or are you convinced that there is a perfect material world that the spirit does not exist in?

What is "the spirit"?

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

Definitions of spirit on the Web:

•the vital principle or animating force within living things

the spirit and material worlds exit simultaneosuly and are eternally linked.  the yin yang dualistic explanation is fine for most human minds that define what they see and experience as good and bad.

some humans transcend the dualistic conception and acheive what is called echod in hebrew, or oneness in english.  when the realization of echod is experienced the separation between all dualistic notions dissolves.  this state has many names, here is one of them

Samadhi (समाधि samādhi, Hindi pronunciation: [səˈmaːdʱɪ]) is the state of consciousness induced by complete meditation. The term's etymology involves "sam" (together or integrated), "ā" (towards), and "dhā" (to get, to hold). Thus the result might be seen to be "to acquire integration or wholeness, or truth" (samāpatti). Another possible etymological breakdown of "samādhi" is "samā" (even) and "dhi" (intellect), a state of total equilibrium ("samā") of a detached intellect ("dhi").

if you must ask what the spirit is i suggest that anyone start with meditation.

Yin and yang is natural flow, its not a forceful thing. Like pushing a snowball down a hill grows on its own.

I believe that spirit and matter are intricately entwined - more like complimentary forces, rather than opposing ones.

Perfect?

I've seen no evidence of a "spirit" world that cannot be explained away by psychology.

Oh pffft, you know what I mean...
perfect in the sense that there is nothing but matter.
Perfectly material -- perhaps complete would be a preferred word?

Do you think this is true? Or are you convinced that the world is completely material and the spirit does not exist?

I'm not convinced of anything, however there is imo a preponderance of evidence for only a material reality. But I have to remain agnostic because I may not be able to access evidence of spirit or not be able to recognize it.

It would be incredibly difficult to "find" evidence of immaterial things, no?
I mean, since all evidence requires material to be meet criteria as evidence...
it seems like an improper measuring stick when such a question is put into play.

But that's just me.
I've always appreciated your semi-closed openness

Well if there is no measuring stick then it's a moot question.  But it makes a stupendous shield for death anxiety and of that I am sure.

Why moot? Because it is materially unprovable?
That's exactly the heart of the question -- do you write it off because it can't be materially proven?
And if so, why?

I already stated it can't be written off. Didn't you read what I wrote? But if there is no real way to address the question then until new methods are found it's a good idea to deal, in the mean time, with things we can address.

I've read everything you've written.
I never said there was no measuring stick, only an incompatibility of a material stick to immaterial spirit.

That's why I posed the question of why without a material stick, you consider the question moot.

Because I'm a material being, I only have material information. Outside of that it's all speculation. It's speculation because everything gets evaluated with a material brain. That's what all the fuss is about here and why there are not definitive answers.

Inside of that it's all speculation too.
No one claims to have the answers, not even scientists.
I've seen revision after revision after revision of scientific thought.
Proving and then disproving what was proved.
It feels more like a way to keep us busy than anything.

the observation of related and entangled opposites is valuable:

I internalize it as a functional theory, and when I get stuck with anything not progressing as imagined,
I try to see how to let it swing back the other way, and so let a kind of opposite opportunity be chosen.

nature is all about alternation, evert-invert etc.

the idea { yin + yang } is never a static thing.

Although I still wonder where you stand on a material-immaterial continuum.

Here is a profound question for you.  If we had not become aware of the fact that we die and did not experience death anxiety, would we be involving ourselves in the same activities as we currently do. Think about this psychologically and in relation to enjoyment of life. Do you see the relation of this question to your above observation? This is maybe the most important question I will ever talk about here.
