to the extent that it changes the way your body and mind work, so by the definition, it falls exactly under the term "drug'.

Any substance (other than food) that is intended to affect the structure or function of the body of man.

By a more stringent (and accurate) definition, a drug does not have any nutritional value. So, according to that, it's not a drug at all.

From Merriam-Webster: (3) : a substance other than food intended to affect the structure or function of the body

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/drug

So it doesn't explicitly say a substance without nutritional value, but I can't think of any other way to distinguish it from a food.

It kind of makes sense to think of that way, just intuitively. If you're including any substances which have an "effect" on the structure or function of the body (including food), then the definition of "drug" is so broad that it's completely useless.

So maybe it's not a formal definition, but I find it to be a useful distinction.
