Since they franchised him last year, he's getting paid a smidge under $17M a year.

From what I understand, and I am not an NFL labor law expert, there are pretty much no rules next year.  No cap, no nothing.  It's gonna get weird.

One of the reasons being a Cowboys fan is so exciting. I am sure the Cowboys will make some sort of big offseason move

I dont think the Saints can cough up the money for Peppers. Peppers to Niner's?

the only problem with these teams that go all buck in the uncapped years have a lot of cutting to do when the next season comes around.

saints are doing just fine, they won the SB with mostly free agents... we have only two solid players that MIGHT not be coming back next year.

there still isnt any agreement that there will be an NFL season beyond next year. The NFL owners and the NFLPA still havent agreed to terms. And if/when they do, there is no promise it will take it back to having a hard salary cap.

I am a fan of the NBA's luxury tax rule. I think it's a nice hybrid of the awful system of baseball payrolls and the hard caps the NFL currently has.

the problem with baseball and the nba is anyone with a few million can make a franchise. it has gotten way out of hand on both those sports. way too many games that have no weight, and way too many teams all vying for 8 great players.

i doubt we will see an expansion of the number of nfl teams. it is perfect the way it is. you start ripping off caps forever, then you will see the yankees all over again and teams like detroit, browns and raiders fold because they will never be able to compete, and who is going to want to buy those franchises when instead of 50 mil to just get investors listening, you will need arab sheiks to throw down a quarter of dubai just to get a half assed college team.

NBA still has a hard cap. They have a soft cap that you can exceed in order to resign returning players. If resigning returning players makes you exceed the soft cap, then you have to pay a penalty. Then still there is a hard cap in place

Do people really think that Sharper is gonna leave, not just after winning his first ring but playing in a defense that gives him the best chance of setting the all-time career interceptions record in the couple of years he has left before he retires?

And Fujita... Not unless Sean Payton dies.

This "Saints are a sinking ship" deal is perhaps the most pants-on-head retarded doom-and-gloom theory I've heard all year, and that's saying a lot. (Not tarring you with this brush, SP, in case this is unclear). They don't have any problems that the league as a whole isn't about to experience; they're just in the spotlight because of Reggie Bush and a Lombardi trophy.

yeah we all thought we would get the respect we deserved

and though there are fewer and fewer people squaking about the saints

now you have the handful of idiots with this sinking ship theory.  "they built this team to win that ONE SUPER BOWL, not for the future."  BIGGEST LOAD OF SHIT I HAVE HEARD TO DATE.

I have logged in this once so that I can set the "last seen" feature up.  let the faggots flow forth into OTD and have it.  Its funny how they all grew nuts after I left.  I'm not here, I'm not reading, but I urge you all to keep melting down over me.  I know, I hurt alot of people, and they deserved it.  epic win for me, epic fail for you.

ythan, you rock dude.  i feel that my time at the shroomery was very positive and enjoyable, but this site is no longer for me. im not mad or upset or disappointed, i just want no part in a pg rated faggot festival.

I don't think they are a sinking ship, but they do have seven starters who will be free agents next year. They will have to choose who they want to keep. This probably won't ruin the Saints, but it will make it difficult to repeat. It's the same difficulty faced by every SB champ trying to repeat the next year.

Not only do they have to worry about free-agency, cap-less salaries, and players who will want (and deserve) raises, but they also have to deal with the bigger Super Bowl Champion concern:  everybody is will be looking for blood, so to speak, when they play the Saints next season.  They thought going undefeated put a target on their backs?  Try being the defending world champions.  Everyone who plays the Saints will put forth their best game to defeat them.

And it doesn't end there, the Saints schedule next season is anything but easy.  Their home games include Carolina, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Seattle and St. Louis.  Minnesota could go either way depending on who is at their QB position, but either way, they will hungry for revenge.  Pittsburgh is always tough, and so are divisional opponents.  I think Atlanta will be even tougher in 2010.

Their road games are even worse though: Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Carolina, Cincinnati, Baltimore, San Francisco, Arizona and Dallas.  Fuck.  Not one of those games will be "easy" except MAYBE Tampa Bay.  Arizona, like Minnesota, will be out for revenge, and their new starting QB isn't half bad.

I think they have the skill to at least make it the play-offs again, but I wonder: will they be as hungry for the Championship as they were this season?  I think so.  Payton and Brees know that one Lombardi is not enough, so I don't think motivation will be an issue.  But it is going to be even harder to get there next season than it was this season....

All great points.

I think the 'not hungry' thing is a myth.  I think most players want all of the titles they can get, and will do what is necessary to get there.  Also, I don't think playing tough teams during the regular season is bad, unless it means you don't get in the playoffs.  At least with this schedule, by the time the playoffs start, they will be battle tested.  Plus, since they have been known to play down to bad teams' levels, a schedule like this might mean they play at a higher level all season.

heh, yeah there is that.  And the schedule looks tough now, but nobody will really know until the season starts, if then.  Carolina losing Peppers will help us beat them, and I think TB is still 'rebuilding' and won't really be a contender next year.  That means Atlanta will again be the biggest threat in the division.

Man, now I cant wait for the 2010 football season  :cuss:

Me neither, man. At least we have the free agent season and the draft, though.

It will be interesting to see who shines at the Combine, and where some key college players will end up.  The QB situation, from FA like Vick, to Favre's retirement (that is actually annoying, especially for Vike fans, I'm sure), and where all the good college QB's go will be interesting.

I do have confidence in the Saints GM Mickey Loomis in improving the Saints roster even more this off-season.  He has done so well these past four years, it will be really interesting to see what he does this year.

The most interesting thing to me is where Kolb/McNabb /Vick go. I think two of them won't be with Philly next year, and any of them could start (maybe not Vick) on a number of teams.
