Without emotions there'd be no happiness.  Why would I want to rid myself of happiness.

Real happiness is arguably beyond basic emotions, as well as real (as in unconditional) love.

Quote:
I think morality is also based in emotion.  Emotions like empathy or guilt.  And many others.

Morality is solely a human concept.. a subjective illusion. Good riddance.

Even if real happiness is beyond basic emotions, it's still an emotion.  And that emotion is "real happiness."  Real unconditional love is also an emotion.  It's called "real unconditional love."

Yes, I agree, being neurotically emotional can be an awful affliction.  But without any emotions at all, we would not feel.  Bliss, contentedness, and true love are still emotions, and they are felt.

As for morality, I think it's necessary for civilization to exist.  I quite like the fact that my neighbors are moral, and don't steal, rape or kill.

I'm sure you'll change your mind about the "good riddance" comment when your neighbors decide to steal all your property. Or perhaps rape or kill you.

I think he's using a different definition of emotions. Searching for something deeper than normal human experience.

Well, he's using an incorrect definition of "emotion."

Emotions are still emotions.  And the emotions that lie "deeper than the normal human experience" are still emotions; just atypical ones.  "Deeper" emotions.

I guess my argument breaks down to semantics.

What he should have said is that we experience the wrong emotions, because they're based on a chaotic life, and a chaotic mind.  We need to experience more enlightened emotions like, well, "true unconditional love."

That's fair enough if that definition appeals to you more. I think it comes down to his theory of different levels of consciousness. He will lump animalistic emotions into one level of consciousness, the "emotional" level. Then the higher levels of emotions he will atribute to a higher level of consciousness and not consider them emotions at all, but something beyond emotions. He's someone who doesn't really stick to normal definitions or normal ways of thought. When i first read that quote i didn't like it either, but i found if you go with the flow and read what he wrote in its entirety you can get a feel for what he's saying, even if doesn't fit into the definitions that we are used to, its just the way he writes and its really quite interesting. It can be very trippy and mind expanding. But i think in the end he is someone who won't appeal to everyones tastes.

I really think Leary is being taken out of context here... if you perceive it in relation to the rest of his ideas it should make more sense.

As for morals.. well you can keep yours, just don't project them onto me.
I was just trying to make the point that they are completely subjective to the individual.

Just because you think something's wrong doesn't make it so.
