"An emotional person is a blind, crazed maniac. Emotions are addictive and narcotic and stupefacient.  Do not trust anyone who comes on emotional.  What are the emotions?  In a book titled Interpsonal Diagnosis of Personality, written when I was a psychologist, I presented classifications of emotions and detailed descriptions of their moderate and extreme manifestations. Emotions are all based on fear. Like an alcoholic or junkie, the frightened person reaches for his favorite escape into action.

Commanding, competing , punishing, agrressing , rebelling, complaining, abasing, submitting, placating, agreeing, fawning, flattering, giving.

The emotional person cannot think; he cannot perform any effective game action (except in acts of physical aggression and strength). The emotional person is turned off sensually. His body is a churning robot he has lost all connection with cellular wisdom or atomic revelation. The person in an emotional state is an inflexible robot gone berserk.

What psychologists call love is emotional greed and self-enhancing gluttony based on fear"

That is so different to the other things Ive read by Leary. Normally i really love his writing but i can't agree with that at all. Maybe its taken out of context.

Next Section  of the 'Emotional Question'  from chapter called 'Seven Tongues of G0d'

"B. The Psychedelic Correlate

The only state in which we can learn, harmonize, grow, merge, join, understnd is the absence of emotion. This is called bliss or ectasy, attained through centering the emotions.

Moods such as sorrow and joy accompony emotions. Like a junkie who has just scored or an alcoholic with bottle in hand, the emotional person feels good when he scored emotionally, i.e., beaten someone up or been beaten up. Won a competetive victory. Gorged himself on person grabbing.

Consious love is not an emotion; it is serene merging w/yourself , with other people, w/forms of energy. Love cannot exist in an emotional state.

Only the person who has been psychotic or had a deep psychedelic trip can understand what emotions do to the human being.

The great kick of mystic experience is that exulant, ecstatoc hit, is sudden relief from emotional pressure.

Could you imagine there could be emotions in heaven? Emotions are closely tied to ego games. Check your emotions at the door to paradise

.......................why are emotions built into th human reprtre...  basic survival purpose. Emotions are emergency alarms. The organism at th point of death terror goes into a paroxysm of frantic activitiy. like a fish flipping blindly out of water. Like a crazed corninal anim al.

rare times emotions are appropriate or relevant. reflex biochemical spurt, There are times when emotional bluffs, like hair rising on a dog's neck ar aprprate. sensible animal avoids situations which elicit fear and accmpyng emtiions. Your wise animal prefers to relax or play- using hs sense, tuned into his delicous body-organ music, closing his eyes to drift back into celluar memory. Dogs and cats are high all tht ime except when bad luck demands emotional measures.

Emotional human being is a revolutionary drug addict cntinously and recklessly shotting himself up w/adrenalin and other dark ferments.  The way to turn off the emotions is to turn on the senese, body, turn to your cellular reincarnation, turn to the elctric glow within and engage only in turn-on ego games."

I kind of like that goonishness about him, all part of his genius in my opinion. In many ways his ideas are revolutionary even the whacked out ones are cool in that they go over the line of what you would normally think is acceptable for humans to think. I think we really need to people to do that and they are a rare breed.

Real happiness is arguably beyond basic emotions, as well as real (as in unconditional) love.

I think morality is also based in emotion.  Emotions like empathy or guilt.  And many others.

Morality is solely a human concept.. a subjective illusion. Good riddance.

Leary is just saying: Be, Man.

Ridding yourself of all emotion, and just 'being'. Clearing your mind of worries and fears and everything he mentioned, so you can make the right decisions in life

Wouldn't that mean any feelings (emotion) of joy and excitement are moot, and you, in that essence, are already enlightened to the point of not needing to ask questions?  I mean if you're emotionless, then nothing can phase you.

Kind of a dumb concept.  You can't just weed out emotions you don't like either, emotions are human.  To suppress emotion and claim it is something negative is to deny your very own existence and to lie to yourself.

I don't claim to hate Leary, however I will point out obvious things like that, and those tend to take me aback a bit on Leary.

The point is to transcend attachment to your emotions, to not let them control you like drugs control an addict.

Then there are those of us who used to think he was awesome, then learned some of his actual history and decided he was a lunatic.

According to the author of The Harvard Psychedelic Club, Leary did in fact work as a government informant as part of a deal to get him out of jail.

No one knows what kind of information he gave though.

I read that he only gave false information to throw them off.

Personally I think he believed in the movement too much to betray it..

Of course he gave them bunk information.  Leary was brilliant.  He invented the behavior test that the prison gave to him when he went in.  It was called The Leary.  He knew exactly how to answer the questions and was put in the low risk section of the prison because of it, which allowed him to break out.  The idea that he was a government agent makes no sense.  Okay, so the government took a Harvard psychologist and made him lead the leader of the psychedelic movement?  They made him advocate people starting their own religions?  They made him advocate overthrowing the US government?  They made him advocate mind expanding chemicals?  They made him break out of prison?  They made him advocate drugs until he died?

And he's the Leary in Leary v. United States, which declared the Marijuana Tax Act unconstitutional!

Timothy Leary had his flaws, but he is a hero to us all.

Re: Timothy Leary on Emotions [Re: Learyfan]

I definitely agree.

He fits the cultural archetype known as "the Trickster".:

Quote:
"Many native traditions held clowns and tricksters as essential to any contact with the sacred. People could not pray until they had laughed, because laughter opens and frees from rigid preconception. Humans had to have tricksters within the most sacred ceremonies for fear that they forget the sacred comes through upset, reversal, surprise. The trickster in most native traditions is essential to creation, to birth".

The trickster deity breaks the rules of the gods or nature, sometimes maliciously (for example, Loki) but usually, albeit unintentionally, with ultimately positive effects. Often, the rule-breaking takes the form of tricks (e.g. Eris) or thievery. Tricksters can be cunning or foolish or both; they are often funny even when considered sacred or performing important cultural tasks. An example of this is the sacred Heyoka, whose role is to play tricks and games and by doing so raises awareness and acts as an equalizer.

In many cultures, (as may be seen in Greek, Norse, or Slavic folktales, along with Native American/First Nations lore), the trickster and the culture hero are often combined. To illustrate: Prometheus, in Greek mythology, stole fire from the gods to give to humans. He is more of a culture hero than a trickster. In many Native American and First Nations mythologies, the coyote (Southwestern United States) or raven (Pacific Northwest, coastal British Columbia, Alaska and Russian Far East) stole fire from the gods (stars, moon, and/or sun) and are more tricksters than culture heroes.

Leary has sent me on some of my most intense intellectual journeys. He really made me question the fabric of society and reality. I think he was one of those rare genius which come along once in a blue moon. One of the most important figures of the 20th century in my opinion.
