Timothy Leary on Emotions (updtd) * 3
    #12120347 -

"An emotional person is a blind, crazed maniac. Emotions are addictive and narcotic and stupefacient.  Do not trust anyone who comes on emotional.  What are the emotions?  In a book titled Interpsonal Diagnosis of Personality, written when I was a psychologist, I presented classifications of emotions and detailed descriptions of their moderate and extreme manifestations. Emotions are all based on fear. Like an alcoholic or junkie, the frightened person reaches for his favorite escape into action.

Commanding, competing , punishing, agrressing , rebelling, complaining, abasing, submitting, placating, agreeing, fawning, flattering, giving.

The emotional person cannot think; he cannot perform any effective game action (except in acts of physical aggression and strength). The emotional person is turned off sensually. His body is a churning robot he has lost all connection with cellular wisdom or atomic revelation. The person in an emotional state is an inflexible robot gone berserk.

What psychologists call love is emotional greed and self-enhancing gluttony based on fear"

"B. The Psychedelic Correlate

The only state in which we can learn, harmonize, grow, merge, join, understnd is the absence of emotion. This is called bliss or ectasy, attained through centering the emotions.

Moods such as sorrow and joy accompony emotions. Like a junkie who has just scored or an alcoholic with bottle in hand, the emotional person feels good when he scored emotionally, i.e., beaten someone up or been beaten up. Won a competetive victory. Gorged himself on person grabbing.

Consious love is not an emotion; it is serene merging w/yourself , with other people, w/forms of energy. Love cannot exist in an emotional state.

Only the person who has been psychotic or had a deep psychedelic trip can understand what emotions do to the human being.

The great kick of mystic experience is that exulant, ecstatoc hit, is sudden relief from emotional pressure.

Could you imagine there could be emotions in heaven? Emotions are closely tied to ego games. Check your emotions at the door to paradise

.......................why are emotions built into th human reprtre...  basic survival purpose. Emotions are emergency alarms. The organism at th point of death terror goes into a paroxysm of frantic activitiy. like a fish flipping blindly out of water. Like a crazed corninal anim al.

rare times emotions are appropriate or relevant. reflex biochemical spurt, There are times when emotional bluffs, like hair rising on a dog's neck ar aprprate. sensible animal avoids situations which elicit fear and accmpyng emtiions. Your wise animal prefers to relax or play- using hs sense, tuned into his delicous body-organ music, closing his eyes to drift back into celluar memory. Dogs and cats are high all tht ime except when bad luck demands emotional measures.

Emotional human being is a revolutionary drug addict cntinously and recklessly shotting himself up w/adrenalin and other dark ferments.  The way to turn off the emotions is to turn on the senese, body, turn to your cellular reincarnation, turn to the elctric glow within and engage only in turn-on ego games."

I need to get that book. I kinda dismissed him for awhile, because alot of people feel he is the reason lsd is as demonized as it is today. some people even think he worked for the government. I should read his books anyways though. I have read The Psychedelic Experience and thats it though.

Leary was a megalomaniac with a messianic complex who would say anything to get a following.

Leary is just saying: Be, Man.

Ridding yourself of all emotion, and just 'being'. Clearing your mind of worries and fears and everything he mentioned, so you can make the right decisions in life

I kind of agree with what he's saying though..

They also touched on this idea in the movie "What the Bleep?!".

Emotions tend to make us completely irrational and impulsive. People who are hyper-emotional seem to be addicted to the chemicals it releases in their brains.
I don't see much difference between a drug addict and an emotional addict.

emotions make life worth living

"emotions are based on fear"
not sure I get that at all...

and comparing having emotions with being a robot just seems completely ironic and stupid.

Sure strong emotions may cloud your thoughts, but he's way off imo

I personally think Leary is an idiot and has done more damage to psychedelics than anyone on the face of the earth.

Without emotions there'd be no happiness.  Why would I want to rid myself of happiness.

I think morality is also based in emotion.  Emotions like empathy or guilt.  And many others.

Exactly what I was thinking.  It's almost funny.  Emotions separate us from robots..

I think that's pretty much the point, too. I'm getting better and better at being rational but at the same time I'm not going to deny myself emotions.

i think his dissertation here needs some clarifying. i think what he is trying to convey is that, it is the attachment to emotions, as representing some kind of truth, that gets people in trouble.

i think that there are those emotions that are conducive to well-being, and those are that are destructive, and it is up to the will of the individual to parse between the two. but, regardless of the quality of the emotion, light or dark, never is it a representation of Truth.

i choose to resonate the higher emotions of elation, compassion, and empathy, yet all the while, the structure and stability of my being is not affected by them, for they are fleeting. they are not Truth.

then there are states of being, which are not fleeting and can be integrated as permanent structures of vibrational resonance. these are also able to accessed at will by the adept meta-programmer. these are non-ephemeral states including happiness, contentment, understanding/knowing, stoicism, etc.

I agree, not only is attachment bad but so is aversion. Don't be afraid to be sad or cry, accept the emotion and let it pass.

i concur, worthy addition to my post. continuous aversion leads to a build up of karmic energies, and when the tipping point is reached, the result is much more dramatic/traumatic than it would have been if the individual had instead chosen to gradually release such energies and impulses, choosing to flow with the stream of passing emotions, instead of against it.
