I'd reccomend the "Alien substrate", its good and airy and promotes mycelium growth.

You could also use birdseed (finchseed) if you have a pressure cooker/canner and then case with a 50/50 or 50/50 plus or any casing of your prefrence.......Ryche uses Birdseed and the Cambodians seem to love it.

really, one needs to master growing with grains (rye, birdseed) befor attempting straw or dung since normally grain spawn is used to inoculate such materials.
