My idea to start a charity to help homeless people

I've been thinking recently about how my life has been entirely selfish.  I've never really done much for others.  I havn't contributed anything useful to this world.

I was once homeless and something I quickly realised was a lot of people are not homeless by choice, they are trapped by the system.  I don't want to debate this too much but some people cannot claim any benefit or go on homeless houseing lists because they don't have a bank account because to get an account you need a current address.  So its a catch 22 situation.

I realise some people think all homeless people are worthless bums.  I don't want to debate this as I have compasion for all people.  I don't care what race you are or what bad decisions you made in your life or even if you are lazy.  There should still be opportunity for you to work your way out.

Anyway,
I'm considering starting a non-profit charity.  Initialy the charity would lie dormant and will rely on donations until it has enough money to purchase a plot of land and have some cheap accomodation and toilet facilities built on it.  The idea is that a homeless person can come and help farm the land etc and in return has a share of the accomodation / food / washing facilities on the site.  For instance, a person could come and help grow/prepare the food, do 8 hours work and that would earn them a bed, dinner and shower.  They could also have mail sent to the property allowing them to break the cycle of homelessness with hard work if they desire.

I think that sums up the idea so far.

Thoughts?  Problems?

If I were homeless I'd probably hang around a farm and steal cows and chickens and shit.

Things for you to consider: 

Since this is non-profit, you will need to fill out the 501c3 application.  How do you intend on marketing/advertising your company?  How long from the start of your company will you be purchasing your land?  What is your mission statement? How will you raise donations?  How will you raise awareness about your company and cause?  Why not seek investors?  Also, your idea is far from new, there are several farms like that in my surrounding area (minus room and board).  What is your major selling point (I know you are non-profit, but YOU and the other officers of the corporation have to be paid somehow...)  Just because your company earns no profit, it still needs money to operate and function properly.  What sets you apart from other companies like you?  Who is your competition locally, regionally, and nationally? 

You'd also have to do a risk assessment...  What if a bum flips out and goes crazy?  What precautions will be taken?  Will you drug test?  Will you perform background checks? I'm sure if your farm is too close to residential areas, residents may get concerned about your having convicts at your farm.  You probably wouldn't be able to be within a certain distance of a school either if you allow convicts.  Will you require the homeless to work a certain number of hours to stay there?  Is there a maximum amount of time you permit someone to live there?

In DC they have a program called "Street Sense" where ameture reporters write up a small periodicle (like a mini-newspaper) and then they sell these to homeless people for $.25/each -- the homeless people then disperse themselves throughout the city and sell them for donations - people typically give $1-$5.

A very large amounht of homeless people take part in the program, and a lot of them do it full time and don't even bother getting off teh streets (it is very easy to work your way "off' the streets using this program).

Not saying you should copy it -- but you might be able to pull some good ideas from it
