Video Card Help

Ok I have a 128mb video card in my computer that I have hooked to my HDTV to watch movies with. The problem is when I try to watch HD movies on it the video lags real bad and i cant watch it. It plays standard avi files fine. When i try to play an .mkv file the video stops every few seconds and starts again. Does anyone know what size video card i need to watch these large HD video files? I was thinking about getting a 512MB one but i doubt wanna shell out the money if its not the problem. Any help is appreciated thanks.

Is it an HD compatible video card? I don't know of any video cards that are HD compatible with only 128mb vram

I'm pretty sure it has to be HDMI compatible to be able to play HD movies, but I am not expert on the matter.

1080 decoding is VERY processor intensive.

There are some codecs that can help like CoreAVC, but there is a limit.

A 128 card just doesnt have the juice to smoothly decode large .mkv files, especially if you have an older CPU, then GPU will try and compensate.

Now that looks kike a good card and its not real expensive either. Hopefully someone on here has some experience with video cards.

Doesnt have to be, its just the easiest to use.

DVI/HDMI/and component will all play HD 1080p

So what size card do you think i need? I was thinking 512 but if 256 will work then i much rather get the cheaper one. All i use this computer for is watching movies.

What are the specs of the PC?

A good video rig would be a 3 GHz processor (pref dual) and 3-4 GB of ram, and probably a 512 card, then you should be fine with the proper codecs.


I have a 2.93 single core, 2 GB ram, and a 256 video card, but i cant handle 1080, i have to use 720, and even then some videos are choppy.

You could try using VLC in openGL mode  Settings > Preferences and then changing to the OpenGL output module in the Videos section

im not sure about AGP cards.

i just upgraded my home theater machine to a NVIDIA 8500GT. it was only $45.

im using linux so i dont know what the equivalent would be but.. using this one library called VDPAU i offload all the video playback to the GPU. playing 1080p video over an NFS share my cpu usage is only at 8% and the picture is perfect.

and dont let the size of the video ram sway you. a 256mb card could be a shit load faster than a 512mb. do your research before buying.

Just remember VLC doesn't use codecs, so you have to use media player, or another player.

thats unnecessary. my HTPC is a pentium 4 with 1gb ram and i have no problem pushing 1080p. its all about how you set up the video card.

I have the same card, bought it from newegg.com

I cant figure out why i get choppy video with 1080p tho, i figured my rig would be fine =/

How would you do that with windows? I spent a few days trying every codec and player out there, but not one worked smoothly.
