Poll: Eggs refrigerated?

I've heard this a few times this week, and when I traveled through asia, south america and even parts of europe no one kept eggs refrigerated. Like you'd go to the supermarket and they'd have the eggs in the same aisle as the bread just out in the open with NO cooling...

when I was in Europe I never refrigerated eggs. One reason was that the damn refrigerators were so small and there was no room. The other reason was that the eggs were fresher and they don't have salmonella there--or at least it is very uncommon. The whole food supply is handled differently and is more food-safety oriented.

I guess I don't need to refrigerate super fresh farmer's market eggs in the US, but I still do because I can.

Where are all the canadian shroomites? don't they just not refrigerate anything up there in the great white north? Like room temperature is freezing to begin with, so they put stuff in the fridge to heat up, sort of like a microwave, as soon as they get that technology...

Which way is tradition meams? My girlfriend and I have been discussing this. We're both pescatarians and we go through eggs so fast, that have a dozen out for a few days, seems like it would save some space in the fridge.

Also, why's it called the "fridge", when it's short for refrigerator? (notice the lack of the "d") This shit is really bothering me tonight!

some people prefer fertilized chicken eggs so there is a market

rule of thumb for eggs, if they're fresh and you know they've never been 
refrigerated, it's fine to keep them at room temp, they'll keep for a
few weeks, if they've been refrigerated, keep them that way because
they'll go bad faster once they've been chilled and allowed to warm up
