William James on philosophers
    #11922679 -

Quote:
To be a real philosopher all that is necessary is to hate some one else's type of thinking.

~ William James, in The Letters of William James, Vol. 2 (1920). Letter, January 29, 1909

Quote:
[T]here is only one thing a philosopher can be relied on to do, and that is, to contradict other philosophers.

~ William James, published in The Atlantic Monthly (December 1904). Remarks at the Peace Banquet, World Peace Congress. Boston, MA (7 October 1904)

Quote:
What every genuine philosopher (every genuine man, in fact) craves most is praise -- although the philosophers call it "recognition"!

~ William James, in The Letters of William James, Vol. 2 (1920). Letter to Henri Bergson, June 13, 1907

What's a philosopher, someone who majored in philosophy? :strokebeard:

:bunny::bunnyhug:
All this time I've loved you
And never known your face
All this time I've missed you
And searched this human race
Here is true peace
Here my heart knows calm
Safe in your soul
Bathed in your sighs

That's his philosophy of course. And it's true enough within limits.

A persons philosophy which they hold close to themselves and is about their own condition in life is true.

Quote:
why the sad face?

Ever notice how lots of people, when they talk to each other, don't really listen to what the others say, but are merely waiting to listen to themselves talk again?

It's tragic in one way, but of course, also pretty funny in another.

I never noticed that. I "listen" intently to every word you write. So I can prove you wrong.:satansmoking:

I said "lots" of people, not everybody, but it appears you're listening to be able to contradict instead? :-)

Of course you are correct. That's how debate + self importance works in this primate ape.:monkeydance:

It's the history of humanity. I guess you could say we're flawed. Or you could say that's how our brains work.

Anyway, I'm as guilty as anyone.
