You could do that, but easier would be to spray with either 90% water/10% bleach, or for more mycelium friendly cleaning use 50% water/50% H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide).

Why not put the casing material into the container and sterilize them both at the same time?

You're not sopposed to sterilize the casing!!!!!
pastureize if anything. Sterilizing peat based casings makes them suceptable to contaminaion form various competitor molds, and harmful pathogenic bacteria.....
