Re: cooler as casing container

thanks for the help. no bottom casing layer at all then? is there a benefit of leaving it out? a 1/4 inch is pretty small. when i cut them into 4ths they are thicker. would a thicker substrate layer be more effective or not? would maybe over lap the slices if they were that thin. any more advice?

Cutting the cakes in half or even leaving them whole would be the best way to approch this.

have 16 pints 85% colonized. would leaving the cakes whole yield TWICE as much fruit as cutting the cakes in half? cuz i can clearly make twice the fruiting area if i cut them in half. what kind of yield can be expected from 16 pints cased like this?

The reason I suggested scrapping the bottom verm layer is that that can be a haven for contaminations...so try it with the verm and see what you find to work for you.

As far as how big your cuts are...the more cuts you make the more complex and strong your mycelium network becomes after recovering..I've had as good or better results from pulverizing than slicing...

interesting. if i slice them thin (and overlap or crumble) what is a good substrate thickness? how thin is too thin and visa versa. thanks.
