Vinyl
    #11891624 -

Just started collecting some vinyl records for the first time.  Some of my favorite artists have released a bunch of EP's and singles on vinyl only so I invested.  Nothing special really, just a $100 Pioneer turntable to start off with but I like what I'm hearing.  The bass on my home theater seems a lot warmer and tighter, but other than that I don't notice a huge difference.

Anybody else collect vinyl?

Me and my brother both collect vinyl.

Mostly jazz and r&b.

We could throw a yearlong funkfest.

If you build it they will shrug.

Whats your opinion on the sound quality compared to CDs?

I did for a while, then I realized I didn't want to spend more money on shit that takes up space. If I had a permanent residence, I probably would start again.

I love the sound quality. It's definitely "warmer" and "richer" (I can't really describe it), but vinyl it has its downsides too.

i like the sound compared to cds. it does seem "warmer" for lack of a better word. ive got a few Cure albums, one from a band called The Roots of Orchis (kinda like Mogwai), and a bunch of spoken word things too.

the spoken word stuff sounds awesome. i have a few readings of shakespeare plays from the 50s. really great sound.

good decision. vinyl is clearly the better format.

all we need is vinyl and mp3s. to hell with cds.

The shorter side lengths kinda add a new dimension to the albums though - side one stops at a point you may not have noticed on the CD, you know?

The sound is different, "warmer" like Swyfty and you both mentioned. Some albums sound drastically different on vinyl and CD (or mp3). Some don't.

I like buying 7" records, they're a fun way to find out about new bands. Usually under $5, about ten minutes of music, and not often released in other formats.

The shorter side lengths keep me more engaged in the album, too. It's not easy to just skip to the parts I like the most, so the album becomes one work as opposed to ten or 15 different small ones. Again, not necessarily better or worse than other formats, but different.

I think you'll be happy with your vinyl collecting overall. Bigger artwork is always a plus too. =]
