I'm being Audited

I find it hilarious after all these years of not filing a city tax it now came up.  I was so used to it being mailed to me by the city I used to live in, but five years later they noticed I have no tax record on file.  Anyone else ever get audited?

Oh I'm not responding it's going straight in the trash.  If those fuckers can figure out I owe money then they can figure out how much I'm not doing shit. It's not federal it's only city and they say they can't get access to IRS files and they need my w2s because with out them they can't "help me".  It's not my job to do their work for them so fuck em.  I'm hopefuly moving to another city anyway.

Yeah it doesn't seem like there is much they can do if they don't have access to IRS files.  They say it will go on my credit and sent to a collection agency but how can it if they don't know what I owe? Does anyone have an awnser to this cause it doesn't seem rational.

I'm a tax auditor by occupation... Nothing is more annoying then people who wait five years to not file anything, so that they're at the point of a body attachment or lien by the state, that they come in doe-eyed and claim they had no idea what to do.

That being said, I think the way taxes are organized are done purposely, to confuse and alienate people. It's unfortunate, but I think if tax code was written in plain straight forward english and not legalese, a lot more people wouldn't screw up so much stuff. People who self-administer and have no background take up time and resources of the state.

Best of luck, I'm sure if you explain a verifiable and believable reason they may waive all or part of the penalties and interest.

In my experience, if we can't verify a number, we go with the highest possible estimate. I work on inheritance and probate taxes, and if $1,000,000 is reported, and someone absconds with the money, we tax at the full $1,000,000 with no deductions allowed.

We also force people to get bonded for the estate, so the bondsmen end up paying out, and they go after anything and everything to recoup their loss.


Your city taxes will probably be completely different, but they can easily see what you filed for your state or county taxes if it applicable to your state. They can also calculate your income on other methods, like seeing what your official liabilities are; mortgage payments, car payments, utilities, etc. Adding these up and coming up with a need-based estimate.

I doubt they will put too much effort into it, if it isn't all that much money.

Oh I didn't do it on purpose I had no idea till today which is what pissed me off because I thought they would mail it to me like all the others and then I just plain forgot after the years.  I have no problem paying the money I owe but I'll be damned if I'm gonna help them out I don't get paid to do their job just like they don't get paid to do mine.  I know it sounds stupid to not remember a city tax but when all my files for returns get mailed to me(except city) I just got used to it.

I'm not an attorney and don't know that state, but some cooperation may help you.

Blatantly ignoring it, will just provoke the city to go after other things. Do you have a water or trash bill with them? Also, letting them refer it to a collection agency is a bad idea. When we have to do that, it's an immediate 16% penalty on top of the original 10% penalty we assess after 90 days of no payment, and it accrues at 13% interest (the penalties do not accrue interest, only the original principal owed). So a little small bill of a few hundred dollars can get out of hand quickly.

I have no water or trash bill with them, I rent and like most places you rent from here that is paid by the owners.  I only pay gas and electric which both are paid out of city and one is out of state even. Don't they have to have my SS# to put it on my credit?  cause it sure seems like they have no idea of anything about me at all, how long I've been living here where I work or anything. They asked for all that info expect my SS#.

I don't know the specifics of what they have. It's entirely up to you, and you should do what you feel comfortable with. It may also be a scam to get info and account info. Are you sure it's from the city?

Oh yeah it's legit I googled the address on the envelope I'm suppose to mail my info to.  The info they asked for is my 2003-2008 Federal Income Tax Returns, Copies of all 2003 through 2008 Federal W-2s and 1099 forms, residential addresses for the past 6 years and my former employers for the past 6 years. I have only lived here since March 2005, but I think 6 years is just the standard for everyone.

Yeah, I think technically you're supposed to keep full tax records for three years with all paperwork, and just the w-2's and original forms for up to seven.

I have the W-2s I just don't feel I should have to get it to them.  Maybe I'm just an asshole but I just don't see why they can't do it themselves. The city turned it over to Central Collection Agency- Division of Taxation.  I was just gonna fill out the residential and employment history but then I thought fuck them they can get all that themselves it seems like they should be able to obtain everything they need with out me.  I was gonna send them a written letter telling them I'll gladly pay the money I owe but they have to figure everything out themselves because I'm not gonna do their job for them, call me an asshole but that's what I feel like they are asking me to do and it seems like the city of which I live should know what I owe.

It's all merit based, like I had said earlier, they can guess high and fuck you. Or you can provide the info and pay what you owe. Either way, you'll only make it harder on yourself, assuming they'll even deal with you directly after it's been referred to a collection agency.

well it hasn't been sent to a collection agency yet it just in the audit department right now and they said they will forward it to one if I don't respond, even though the title on the page says Central Collection Agency Auditor (which sounds deceiving) they say it hasn't gone there yet.  They have given me 30 days before it gets sent to one.

i havent filed taxes in like 5 years....  but i work under the table on farms, and side building jobs.  so i kinda live "off the grid"

my friend got his taxes done at some place, and they fucked up.  and the government sent him a letter last month, saying they need $3800 for 2008 claim...  lol that sucks!!!
