For those who served in the military, help a college kid:

Sparked by another thread,

graduate college then join the military, or drop out of college, join the military, then come back?  What would be the percs of each?

I personally wouldn't go to college first, then risk my life in war later...

You could go to college while you're serving, too, don't forget about that.

Well I'm already in my 4th semester of college and really want to just do college first.  As for the risking my life part, I feel like I need it and if I don't serve I'll always say "what if." 

I want the adventure and my brother was in the gulf war and loved every minute of it and is still benefiting from it today.

If you have anything on your record you can forget about military right now. I've been trying to get into the Army/Navy for the past year.

They wont take me even though I'm in really good shape and really smart because I have a possession for weed on my record.:crankey:

Finish college, get a degree and go to OCS that way if you graduate you can get commisioned as a 2nd LT

finish college, then you can be an officer.  Way more money, better living conditions, and you don't have to do shitty manual labor.

yea to be an officer right?  So that guy knew what he was talking about.

How much of a difference in pay does an officer make and does that mean I would have a my own platoon or something?  What about if I joined the navy instead of marines, same deal, some type of officer also?

I think that all branches commision you as a 2nd Lieutenant after completing Officer Candidate School and basic, I could be wrong though I know some do

Pay is about x4 what you would start out if you were enlisted. Probably a lot more than that.

I think that's good that you're finishing college. :thumbup:

I wanted to be a Marine a couple of years ago, and I regularly visited a recruiter, but then I figured that I prefer to live and not risk my young life.

One of my Marine cousins fought in Fallujah; he survived and he said being a Marine kicks ass!

Maybe you should join the coast guard instead they will pay for your college and its less of a chance to risk your life or be in combat. plus you get to live by the water and learn about boats, etc.

My son is in the army in Afghanistan, and been in Iraq 2 times.  His units motto is, 'Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out' :tongue2:
