tracers...what causes them when we're on acid?
    #11670863 -

I can't really seem to figure out what is making our brain do this...obviously theres alot we don't know about what happens to our brains when we trip...but tracers seem like the obvious thing that would be researched...

has there ever been scientific studies done on why acid gives tracer?

My theory, not being one of absolute scientific conclusion, is that when serotonin receptors are agitated and large concentrations enter the brain, a delay occurs between the optic nerve and the brain's interpretation of the image we see. Instead of our brain quickly interpreting what the optic nerve is seeing and allowing us to associate it as a stable object, the delay in communication causes the trails we see.

That's my theory anyway. Some science behind the reasoning, but like I said, not definitive.

I think it has something to do with the image persisting in your awareness for longer than usual. So you get the first image plus the second image with another image laid on top and one on top of that and in that moement of awareness there are 10 copies of the object that is moving.

I don't know if any reaserach has been done on the subject, and I don't know if there are any simple mechanistic causes for it brain wise.

I always wonder... what if there's some relationship between psychedelics and time? I mean obviously they distort it, but what if the more fucked up you get on certain psychedelics, the closer you get to a dimension where time doesn't exist or some shit. Haha I mean it's nothin I actually believe but I just like  thinkin about it, plus you never know! but yea wronguy's idea sounds more realistic

I am pretty sure its just from the dilation of your pupils... having the same effect as an long exposure in a photograph.

If that were the case wouldn't patients having eye exams requiring pupil dilation be seeing trails when they leave their optometrist? Vision is certainly impaired, but nothing to that degree.

I actually can answer this! I saw it on national geographic- it has to do with these big bangs and flashes in our brains that slow down or speed up so we perceive things with more detail and slow motion.

I had a thought somewhere along these lines. Psychedelics partially remove you from time, so when you are seeing a "tracer," what you are actually seeing is the same object at multiple different positions in time. You only see it with moving objects because there needs to be a progression from point A to B to allow you to observe the passage of time.

one time my vision was cut into frames, it was like a frame every two seconds, there were big gaps in between movement, I don't know what that was about.
