What's the craziest airplane experience you've ever had?
    #11608374 -

How bad has your turbulence gotten?  Has anything really crazy happened on your plane?  I just flew from PA to Dallas and tonight it was incredibly turbulent.  We flew through a thunderstorm and the plane tilted over on its side, then the other side, and then dropped for several seconds. Everyone screamed.  We would bounce up, then drop again.  I got sick. The storm was so intense there was no visibility at all, except lightning.

It was scary.  I don't know if I will fly again due to this.  I was truly concerned that we were going to get knocked out of the sky.  I mean, the plane tilted on its side.  I didn't think they were supposed to do that.

Is this atypical?  I know some bounciness is part of the experience, but this went beyond bouncy into the "warning warning DANGER" category in my brain.  I really freaked out.

Anything like this ever happened to you before?

I have flown to Germany several times with the Army
and yes the turbulence can be quite unsettling.

Your experience seems to be a bit abnormal IME
turbulence doesn't normally turn the plane on its side :omgz:

Severe turbulence happens... but not often. It has been years since I have flown through anything like that.

Aw, come on.

I usually take such situations to be really fun. There is no choice, you can either enjoy the teetering on a crash, or completely crash. The two options are have fun, or die.

That tilting sounds intense! I guess the pilots were trying to rapidly change course out of the shit that the plane started to fly into.

I was already leery of flying before this experience but the stress from that trip tonight made that mode of travel seem like a terror.  I'm glad to hear that it's not typical for turbulence to be that bad because I will probably have to fly again in June.

When we landed, everyone started clapping.

every second of every day, a plane is flying in the sky. The chances of being in a plane accident are very slim given the amount of successful flights each day.

I've been in turbulence, but nothing serious.

I worked hard to have a good attitude about it but I don't do well on planes in the best situations.  In fact I still feel like I am on the plane (the bed feels like it's moving) because flying seems to do something to my inner ear.

Although I admit I feel more worldly and accomplished now that I went through that.  Like if I survived that crazy flight, surely I can survive others.

Statistically, mules kill more people then airplanes each year.

I kept telling myself this while I was on the plane.  I haven't even seen a mule in a decade.

Riding an airplane as a child(12)

Taking off, looking out, and landing.
HOLY FUCK, and a LITTLE TURBULANCE.

I felt great overall.
And I wanted to be a pilot for years and years.
And over time, and NEVER flying again, I've now become terrified of flying.
No shit. Terrified.
Blah blah. I know.
My sister in law was a stewardess. I know, they "NEVER crash"
But they do. They often do.

Though if you have any faith in the average mechanic, or person.
You should be fine. I don't. Simple as that.

Psychedelic energy can remind me of the anticipation and anxiety from the first time I ever flew in a plane.

Again, this reminds me of a few trips when I was happy to see that the boring walls were, in fact, still there.

i used to fly alot, and there's some really scary shit that happens.

once we had a 4-6 hour layover, when we finally get on the plane the pilot is like, "well we through a couple planes together and this is what we got" or some shit along those lines, it was a joke....yet he was serious.

another time it was at night, so you can't see shit, anyways it must have been storming like crazy because the plane would go up about 20 feet and then we would "bounce" down 100 feet, then it would rattle back and forth, it litterly felt like the plane was about to snap in 2.  then this guy infront of us starts cracking jokes about how a fortune teller didn't know her shop was gunna close.  everyone on that plane thought they were about to die.

those 2 times were on those tiny planes

the first time i ever flew was on one of those jumbo planes, 457 or w/e, that sob was awesome, we musta came close to space or something in that thing because thats the only time in all my flights that we ever went "above" the clouds...so far about that you looked down on them, and all you could see is trippy ass cotton clouds twisting all over and the glow of the sun...it just looked like you could jump out the plane and land on the clouds they were so thick its all you could see...just awesome.

Yea, small planes are drastically different than a jumbo jet

I was flying in a jumbo tonight, that's why I got really freaked when it started doing acrobatics.  It seemed so wrong, it made me think something really bad was happening.

Ive had it happen before in jumbo jets; it's not terribly uncommon, but not terribly common either.
I fly maybe 2-4 times a year and Id say Ive had similar experiences to that maybe 3 times.

Flying to Italy. Tweaking fucking balls on the plane at night time, I was the only one awake  , then we flew through some turbulance and everyone fucking woke up and now I'm tweaking there and people are getting up to go to the bathroom and shit!@

I was pissed! That's the only time turbulance ever pissed me off! :P
