Digital camera for my mom. need some suggestions
    #11568227 -

My mom says she wants a digital camera for Christmas, she is technologically impaired so it's gotta be something somewhat simple and also no more than $100  What would you suggest and why?

Go get the one that fits her hand and fits her pocket or purse.
Don't worry about megapixels or any of that crap. And photo printers are a scam, tell her to get prints at Walgreen's if she wants them.

This. I second it as an avid amateur photographer. For $100 you're not going to buy a Hasselblad anyway, so save yourself the hassle of reading a million reviews and just go to a store and buy something that looks nice and seems to work ok. The advantage of a brick&mortar store, of course, is that there's a chance that you can actually try before you buy.

Kodak from new egg

Its about $100 (USD) With shipping, and WILL arive FAST from new egg (the shit!)

Also order this Micro SD card. Its $8.00 more and will most likely fit her cell phone too. That way she can easily transfer her pics to another device. She can also give the card to most photo shops. Offer to send the photos by email to someplace like costco and pick up the prints in a couple of hours later for like ¢.20 a piece. That way she gets that emotional satisfaction that makes it lovey dovey (moms always want some personal interaction with a gift.)

The camera takes AA batteries, so she wont have any surprises there. Initially tell her you will do the leg work when she wants to use her images, so just hold on the the USB cord & disk and don't worry about it will she takes some photos later.

Point and shoot. merry Christmas.

Or just order a spare 3rd-party battery for, say, $10 so she can keep one in the charger and the other in the camera and swap when necessary. The importance of AA batteries is overrated IMO. Especially since regular (non-rechargeable) batteries tend to run down extremely quickly in digital cameras. Rechargeable NiMH's perform much better, but all in all the costs (NiMH's batteries + charger) will be higher than when using a proprietary battery with additional spare.

Then again, that's just my opinion, and I don't think it's much of an issue in any case. Proprietary battery or AA's, all fine by me.

It's just easier if you travel. If you are always near home, second battery is fine.

yea, rechargeable camera batteries (like in cell phones) are the way to go 100 times over if your a techie, but i have a grandma that fits the description of his mom. She gets very irritated by anything new and strange looking like a square battery. If she has to physically take it out of the camera to charge, or plug in a strange looking usb thing to the computer (where she wouldn't know where to plug it in) she would be very uncomfortable, and prolly call me 2 or 3 x's while trying it. I would also take her 10 min and repeated talking to herself lining up the arrows, or connectors to the charger.

She already knows how to use AA batteries, so to her they are better. She probably has 15 of them in that big drawer between the silverware and sink that has a little rubber grip to open mayo, scissors, and some weird thing that slices apples (most microsoft engineers couldn't use.) feel me?

Yes, you have a valid argument. The only thing that will remain cumbersome is the fact that digital cameras deplete regular AA's extremely rapidly, sometimes allowing as little as 10 pictures to be taken with a _fresh_ set of AA's. Then again, that may be perfectly acceptable, or at least less of a problem than fiddling with a proprietary battery for the type of user you describe.

I got one for my lil sis with similar specs and it could video record for over a half hour, and take 30- 50 pictures depending on how long it remained on between shots. I've since borrowed it for vacations away from american power outlets, because i didnt want to fuck with euro outlets, or bringing (loosing) my charger. AA's are everywhere.

if your only getting 10 pics with a set of AA's then you must have a 1000 watt HPS Flash attached to it

p.s. photo printers are not a scam, check out the epson artisans 810's  they were on sale for under $200 a few days ago, coupled with epson paper you will have photo's as good or BETTER than what you get from the store AND no jerks will get to look at your vag pics

oh and rechargable AA's for the win.

 They don't make their money off the printer.

And if your mom is printing out vag shots, that's another thread entirely.

In my book, that is pretty bad performance. For comparison: the simple Nikon camera with proprietary battery (which actually has a lower capacity than two AA's combined) I gave to my girlfriend will do over 200 shots before the battery runs down (I've never managed to run the battery down entirely, even over a full weekend of intensive mushroom shooting). My parent's old Canon compact camera will shoot somewhere around 150 images on 2 NiMH's, but manages a max of about 20 on non-rechargeables.

Rechargeable being the keyword here. If you read carefully, you'll see that I clearly pointed out that digital cameras tend to perform badly when using regular AA's. Performance with rechargeable NiMH's is usually just fine. This is because NiMH's can handle a larger discharge current than regular alkaline batteries (which tend to have a much higher internal resistance).

yes i know they make money off the ink, but that still doesn't mean anything....you still save lots of money and enjoy using the best printer availble.  and its super easy to use....so easy anyone that can read can use it so anybodys mom can enjoy it.  all you do is pop out your card, pop it in the printer, and you can litteraly print your photo's through a walkthrough guide on a hi res color lcd screen that takes about 6 finger presses....its seriously a bloody awesome printer, and it can print directly onto cd's/dvd's altho mom's prolly won't enjoy that feature unless they are porn stars but you can always barrow it

unless your talking about a wrist watch battery i really didn't care what battery you were talking about, and yes rechargeable was my key word, a word that you never mentioned(in the post i replied to), hence i did.  in the post where you did talk about rechargeables you presented false information, rechargable AA's will save you money over the bullshit overpriced didicated batterys for camera's.  $40 will get you a GREAT charger and 4 AA's and 4 AAA's.  then if you wish you could add on some of the hi end AA's that hold charges better for another $8.  bottom line is you WILL save money in the long run, one big reason is those batterys you can actually carry over to other devices while your NOT using the camera, and when your camera breaks.  Plus you can actually buy high quality AA's, when you buy the didicated bullshit for camera's you have no idea of the quality, which most likely are designed to fail within 4 years or less and most likely when they do fail you won't even be able to find replacements....all this means AA's RULE

that being said they have regular AA's Made for camera's which still fits into the context, that being non rechargable AA's , altho i must admit im sure you never thought of those batterys when you wrote that since you would have mentioned them. but those for sure get way way more than 10 shots, and again regular batterys will to....especially with the camera's were talking about in this thread...

that being said, a big reason why rechargables last longer is because they hold more charge, and now they have newer ones that Hold their charges if left unused which now makes them very very awesome.

canon powershot Sd750. It is aroun 150-200$.
Has face detection, 3x optical zoom, 12 megapixels, HD video mode, optical image stabilization, macro lens, 2.5" screen

My mom bought this camera a few months ago, she absolutely loves it.
She's pretty technologically illiterate, and she takes great pictures with the camera.
Any focusing, light changing, or scene mode---the camera automatically adjusts to take the best picture. You don't have to worry about going into the menu to get to a different setting, because the camera takes damn good pictures every time just by pressing the shutter button.

Since that's the case I would highly reccommend the one I told you about.
Also you get up to 280 pictures (with flash) on a single charge, so running out of batteries is hardly an issue. The camera supports SD memory cards which are probably the most common out there. Hope I helped a bit
