I've been scouring the interwebz. I've found other websites that use the smilie and have contacted the administrators for where they got it from. I'm going to hunt the creator down.

I think this conclusively shows what the form of the smilie was from. Therefore it is evident in my opinion that the smilie is looking down and to the left. Until I get contact from the administrators from the other internet forums, this is the best I can do.

He's clearly facing left, and yet the left side of his head slopes down much more sharply than the right, completely consistent with the 2 pixels on the left and three on the right along the top of the graemlin's head.  It's a trick of Patrick Stewart's long chromedome.

It's entirely possible to facepalm using your left hand when facing either left or right. Try it and see for yourself. The act of facepalming doesn't prevent your neck from being capable of rotating.

Who only facepalms on one side of their face?  You'd end up looking like you're covering your eye for an eyesight test!

When I facepalm, the blade of my hand is roughly parallel to the ground, and my hand spans from cheekbone to cheekbone, pretty much right in the middle of my face (along the horizontal axis).  And when I facepalm, it doesn't take any extra strain to face in either direction, regardless of which hand I'm facepalming with.

In such a case, does your neck not crane downward to conform to the palm of your hand? And in such an anatomical position does it not also have the supinated palm in a position that has the chin pointing down and to the left, in a position that indicates that an anatomically correct human being coincides with evidence indicating that the smilie is looking down to the left?
