I've always felt that he's facing down and to (our) left, covering his face from the side with his left hand.

Although he could be facing the screen. What say you?

I'd always thought he was facing toward the screen... But now that you mention it, I see that I was wrong.

Look at the pixels across the top of his head. They're asymmetric. So clearly it's not a forward facing graemlin (if it were, it'd be easier and more sensible to use a symmetrical curve for the top of the head).

I'd always pictured it as a graemlinized version of the picard facepalm, but I guess I'd never really thought about what direction picard is facing.

No, it's meant to imitate the Captain Pickard facepalm, which is where the meme came from. The Pickard pic (as shown above) is down and to the left. Look at the curvature of the top of the head in the smiley and tell me that isn't asymmetrical. It's oval in a way that shows down and to the left.

If anything he's facing slightly to the right. you can tell by the amount of pixels making up the top part of his smiley face.

the part closest to the observer would seem smaller (i.e. "scrunched up") compared to the further side of smiley face.
