If anyone has been waiting for Michael Phelps to become a spokesman for marijuana legalization. Not going to happen.
If anyone was expecting Matt Lauer to look at the bigger picture rather than condemn a hero for something no more serious that a traffic ticket. Not going to happen.

Phelps' First TV Interview Since Bong Photo

Michael Phelps was on NBC's "Today" show this morning for his first TV interview since a photo allegedly showing him smoking marijuana surfaced in a British tabloid in January. Click here to watch.

The Olympic swimmer would not tell host Matt Lauer whether he was, in fact, smoking pot at that fateful party in South Carolina in November, instead calling his behavior, quote, "a bad mistake."

Phelps claimed he only found out about the now-infamous photo a day or so before it went public, and denied rumors that he tried to convince the tabloid not to run the image.

The resulting scandal prompted Kellogg's to drop the 23-year-old from a lucrative endorsement deal. Phelps told Lauer he was "disappointed" with the contract issues, but that his biggest regret was hurting his friends, his family and his fans. He also spoke about the pressure of being under constant public scrutiny.

This is not the first time Phelps has been in trouble. The gold medalist was sentenced to 18 months probation in December 2004 after pleading guilty to DUI charges. On the "Today" show, Phelps admitted he's messed up a lot in his life, but insisted he won't make the same mistakes twice. He says now he just wants to help keep other people from repeating his bad decisions.

Despite the negative publicity he has been buried under for the past two months, Phelps says he is still optimistic about his future and is looking forward to the 2012 Olympics.

Wow. I now have 0 respect for Micheal Phelps. He reminds of the stupid 14 year old that gets caught smoking weed and is like "I made a mistake oh its so bad It will never happen again!". 

If that was me I would've been like "Yeah I smoked pot. Got really high that night too. Theres nothing wrong with smoking weed its a personal choice. Would you rather me drink and fuck up my body? I kind of need a healthy body to swim good. So you can fuck off with your "weed is bad" nonsense." lol

He needs to man up, hes 23 for god sake!

He's just playing the game, I like how Matt Lauer plays on knowing his family and how hard was it to tell your mom?  Stupid shit like that as well as the kids who have his poster on the wall and what it would of been like for them over this incident. 
I would love it if he could speak open and honestly but he couldn't even say he smoked pot at that party because of that publicity seeking idiot sheriff that went after him, and you could tell by the way Phelps handled it he knows it's not a big issue and that he understands the media well.
I still respect Phelps, fuck Matt Lauer.

Although it would have been awesome for Phelps to use this incident to advocate marijuana law reform, I never really expected him to do that.  He's not the first to use the "I made a mistake" line for damage control. 

But he did miss an opportunity when asked whether he already made the same mistake twice considering the DUI in his past.  He should have clearly said "No, because I wasn't putting anyone's safety at risk with what I did at the party."

Would you risk 4 million dollars just to make the legalization movement look a little better?
I know i sure as hell wouldn't. Especially when one shit face sheriff already tried to press charges. I seriously doubt even a significant fraction of the people saying they would do it would.

I'm not saying anyone in this thread is full of shit or anything though because i don't know you people.

I odn't think hes a pussy or anything I just think that instead of doing what every celebrity does when they get caught(bad mistake) he should have stood up for human rights a bit.

I don't blame Phelps for not standing up for his and our rights, and speak in favor of cannabis reform because how many people do you know that smoke actually stand up for their rights? I think more people are hopping on the reform train and are searching down that political path on where they stand; however, I still know the majority to be the "Duuude pot is badasssssss bro".

So it is good publicity that a gold medalist smoked because it shows it isn't the outcasts of society that do it and this probably opened a lot of typical middle class American families' eyes because they worship people like him (sports + nationalism + winning = worshipping hero pride).

So people were forced to hear he partook in something illegal and he isn't denying what he did nor is codemning that smoking weed itself is bad, he just says that was a bad personal choice and standing on neutral ground. I'm sure he took a lot of heat from his 'life' coaches. I give the guy credit too for being tactful and trying not to blow this out of proportion.

So in the end I do think Phelp's is doing the right thing and he is doing as much as I think we would expect him to.

So long as he doesn't go from poster boy of eight swimming olympic gold medals to the poster boy of that stupid DARE group.:smirk:

Maybe he doesn't really care that much about MJ?  Maybe he only smokes every now and then and it just isn't that big of a deal.

I don't think that attempting to preserve your public image for the sake of yourself, millions of dollars and family members makes him a "pussy".
