Michael Phelps loses Kellogg's Sponsorship over bong-hit photo

PORTLAND, Ore. - Cereal and snack maker Kellogg Co. said it won’t renew its sponsorship contract with Olympic swimming star Michael Phelps because of a photo that showed him inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

The Battle Creek, Mich.-based company said Thursday that Phelps’s behavior — caught on camera and published Sunday in the British tabloid News of the World — is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.”

The company put Phelps on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.

The 23-year-old swimmer, who won eight gold medals in Beijing, has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photo surfaced from a November house party at the University of South Carolina.

Among those standing by him, even if they don’t condone his behavior, are Visa Inc., Speedo, luxury Swiss watchmaker Omega and sports beverage PureSport’s maker Human Performance Labs.

Phelps apologized for his “regrettable” behavior and “bad judgment” after the photo appeared.

Phelps’s agent was not immediately available to comment.

Kellogg had contracts with Phelps and other Olympic athletes to support its association with the U.S. Olympic team. The company said in a statement that it won’t renew its contract with Phelps, which expires at the end of February.

Kellogg would not disclose the value of its deal with Phelps.

Experts have said that after Phelps won his medals, he scored millions in endorsement deals.

"not consistent with the image of Kellogg"
Would that be different if he was pictured doing a line of ketamine, being as how that would be consistent with the image of kellogg's "special k" brand of cereal?

"Kellogg's was founded as the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company on February 19, 1906, by Will Keith Kellogg as an outgrowth of his work with his brother John Harvey Kellogg at the Battle Creek Sanitarium following practices based on the Seventh-day Adventist Christian denomination"

Our Christian Government doesn't like Marijuana, and neither does our Christian cereal company's.  Kellogg's cereal was made in a Seventh Day Adventist colony during the wait for the second coming of Christ (that never happened) .  7th-days are silly.

It just seems so unbelievable that a man can get fired from his job for simply having a different hobby during his free time.

We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter."  --Max Planck

He may loose the Kellogg's deal but I bet Little Debbie and Doritos will be placing that pic on every product they have. The biggest consumers of snack/junk food are stoners. It would be the equivalent of Mark McGuire's picture on a bottle of Roids.

honestly, in the 21st century... multi-million dollar companies arent christian... based. I dont think anything is christian anymore but the churches those are still based off money and politics.
Last time I checked the U.S. was fighting a war in the middle east, how is it a christian government, they make it acceptable to kill someone? Everything says in "God we trust". Not in jesus christ we trust. Everything the bible says not do to the U.S. does nowdays. 200 years ago.. this place was fought over, and won over by the fathers of this land, then it was a christian government. Everything was based off christianity then.. it got jacked over.. by different cultures that came here.

Who wants to boycott kellogg? Its society you should boycott... society is responsible for everything... The U.S. has a bred a anti-marijuana culture since the 1950s, those are the people at the top of government now. Once that changes so will laws. It was only 65 years ago when coca cola use to put cocaine in the ingredients of a coke.
In the end Phelps will be fine. Id say this would just make him push harder for wanting more medals.

The fun part is that hes already been signed and all this is saying is that his contracts won't be renewed. I love how "offended" the Kellog's brand is; yet not enough to pay to actually cancel the contract.

I totally agree.  Many christians are not really christians (followers of christ), it is the Pseudochristian values which I speak of:  Things like " Yes, I know, thou shall not kill, but I would really like that piece of property"  In my own opinion though, it is the weakness and falsity of the christian teachings as a whole that makes most christians not able to really be like Jesus.  As for your "in god we trust" statements:  It may not say distinctly which god it is we trust in, but I believe that our American society thinks of god in judeo-christian terms ( a very anthropomorphic god), whether they realize it or not.

Word.
However, to make real change - we must then change society. Will it ever happen, time will tell.
