How long do we have to feign outrage and shock when we see an athlete or celebrity get caught for smoking weed?  I actually had a friend tell me that a poll say 65% of Americans don't care, but I don't know where that poll was taken and is a shitty point of reference. 

As for the 3 month ban...  I don't think that Team USA cares that he was caught smoking.  The suspension is just to get the anti-drug people off of their back.  Truth be told, he doesn't miss any competition and he gets more free time.  Epic win. 

When are they going to have an athlete or a celeb who GAINS endorsements from a pot bust?  Like, how awesome would it be to see Phelps advertising Doritos.  Or having Chester Cheetah telling him to cram the dude's mouth who took the picture of him with cheetos to the point of asphyxiation.  I smell super bowl commercial!

I really think he should work with Roor to get some endorsement money.  Though, they sort of already got a lot of free advertisements with that pic :smile:

Phelps will be fine, he will compete in 2012...that isn't for 3 more years and everyone will have forgotten about this in like 2 weeks just like we all did when he got a DUI.  He is a champion and will continue to be one.  I just wish he would make some pro-pot statements to push the legalization movement, but maybe that will be for the next superstar caught tokin.  One can hope...

If he hasn't made any pro-pot statements by now, I doubt he will. He has consulted with his handlers, family, agents, and advisors on how to respond to this situation. The way he wants to handle this is to admit his 'wrong doing', apologize and get back to winning medals.

He's not a full-time party animal who drinks and tokes and takes time off occasionally to break world records. He is a full-time athlete who works his tail off, trains almost nonstop who took some much needed R&R, and some A-hole took a picture of him.

I'm sure he wishes this never happened. He does't want to become a spokesman for marijuana, he just wants to forget all about it and put it all behind him, in my opinion.

Some people are upset with him for not living up to the squeaky clean image the media has created, and some people are upset that he hasn't taken a stand and told his detractors to piss off.

The debate about this will continue with or without him (probably without) and in the end something positive will result. 42% of the US has smoked pot including the past 3 Presidents, scientists, judges, pillars of society, people from all walks of life.

People are questioning why toxic alcohol is held in such high regard and safe marijuana and it's users are considered evil. Very few people actually believe the lies about pot anymore. Even children can see through the BS and are questioning it. Moms and Dads are being forced to tell the truth about the safety of pot to their kids and about their own past or current pot use. The only real danger of using pot is that it's against the law.

We've lived through Prohibition for so long it's become accepted that since it's illegal it must be bad for us. And since all the arguments for it being bad for us have been proven false, and even proved to be good for us medically, we are raising our voices to legalize it again, and politicians are listening.

Ask yourself what would be happening if this were the 1980s, or the mid 90's. It would be a hell of a lot different. He would have the book thrown at him! People are waking up in greater numbers, and you can see this all around you. Nobody is suggesting he be banned for life (compared to the people who say it's not a big deal).

With all the people making a fuss about this story, more and more people are standing up and asking what the big deal is. That is a good thing, as it makes the anti-drug people just look foolish. People don't like stupid unenforceable laws, and the more people that see these laws as draconian, the better. Politicians pick up on this, and thats when change happens. When politicians start seeing anti-marijuana positions as hurting their chances of reelection, they will become pro-marijuana.

A DEA spokesman has said that pot is so strong now, it can kill you. The way pot kills you is with a bullet in your spine from when you are running away from the DEA...

Oh yeah, definitely...he probably won't even talk about the "incident" ever again.  I should have said "one can dream" rather than "one can hope"...haha.
