questions, questions, and questions, oh my!

hey, I've got a few more questions for all yall mycologists out there that most definitely know more about growing mushrooms than I do..

1) I'm using a rubbermaid tub as an aquarium, and it rests nicely in a closet.. I was debating about wether I was gonna go through the effort of cutting a hole in the lid and putting a little window there, when I got the thought.. just HOW light sensitive are mushrooms? Do you think that the light that would penetrate through the top of the rubbermaid tub that comes directly from a 60 watt light bulb would be enough to initiate pinning?

and the other..
2) On casings, I know it says that calcium is important in the FAQs to level the pH of the casing layer if using peat, but I was wondering what people's personal experience of not using it was.. if it really is a threat to the mushrooms, or if it's just an extra step of precaution that a lot of people take?

1. The light will not penetrate a lid but may penetrate the sides of the rubbermaid. Most people claim that they use 12 hours on 12 hours off of light cycle but others say that one to three hours is all you need.
2. Not neccesarry but useful when using peat if only verm dont worry.

so your jars are all colonized? the lights so they grow up, the hole is your choice, i think unecessary, and your second question about calcium, it would be wise to use to balance out the pH on a 50-50 casing

I'll probably end up cutting a hole in the lids.. or just maybe take the lids off.. I'll decide when I see my next pay check. hehe

As for the casing, I have lots of jars on the very edge of being birthed/cased... I did one casing with 50-50 but didn't use calcium.. the more I think about it, I can't find any reason to keep using peat moss.. the mushrooms doesn't use anything from it anyways, and I know that verm can last in wet conditions well without mold or anything.. I'll just say to hell with the peat moss with my next
