I'm paraphrasing but

"if a philosophy doesn't improve your life then it's just mental masturbation"
All philosophy is mental masturbation.  Who ever said masturbation is wrong? Besides youth pastors of course...

Nothing can validate a philosophy, because a philosophy is not a mathematical equation.  Although I passionately love philosophy, I think at least some of us can agree that it's just a bunch of primates babbling to each other in their made up primate mouth language.

Finally, he died at 58 in 1973.  Yeah, this is young if you died at 58 today, but it's not that young in 1973. I don't have time to find the numbers now, but I guarantee the average age of death was at least 10-15 years younger than it is today.

And to imply that you can't learn much in 58 years makes you a complete asshat. I don't know what else to say about that gem.  Most people have a university degree by age 22...

Physical masturbation stimulates the immune system and mood. Mentally it has the same effect if your views can constantly be acknowledged and reinforced. This is one of the main reasons religious, yet seemingly intelligent, people can't seem to give up their religion. It really does bring them some degree of happiness, but generally that degree of happiness can be attained with ease else where.

On top of that when your ideas are constantly refuted and ridiculed(or simply completely ignored) it can have the exact opposite effect, and in the most extreme of imaginable situations lead to greatly depressive actions like suicide. More often then not thought it just leads to a sort of mental numbing not unlike what occurs in your body during repetitive and uncontrollable pain.

Valid or invalid, you can't rule out someone's argument by slandering the person. The only way you can call an argument invalid is by disproving the argument itself with the proper reasoning.

I think his thoughts merit further discussion, and if they are invalid we will find that out by examining them in detail!

Alan Watts. God damn I love that man.
Didn't know about the alcoholism until this very thread. It fits into what I'd thought about him, though ... because (except for when I was first introduced to him) I've always had the impression that he viewed all of his philosophizing as just something to do.
If you'd charged him to his face with "mental masturbation," my impression is that he wouldn't deny it.
