Incidentally, Martin Luther King cheated on his wife, so I suppose we can throw out the whole notion of racial equality and civil rights.

I have a hard time believing you have learned so little in your time here. Commingling adultery with racial equality makes no sense.

Does anyone here TRULY believe that self-destruction is evidence of knowledge of or part of the path of The Tao?

Maybe he saw his self-destructive ways for what they really were, and through that was able to gain insight into the human problem.

The fact that he failed to walk his own path only means that he couldn't live up to it....not that the path wasn't true.

If you throw out someones words on account of their life choices then I believe you are using an "Ad Hominem"....or attacking the person, rather than their argument.

Uh huh. What other metric is there for a guide to living other than how one lives?

I think Watts would contest the very notion of "self-destruction" because he points out that the self is a myth.

Well he puts it into words far better then i ever could.
His teachings are inspiring and reflect his insights.
At the very least he is provoking thought on the matter.

But a philosophy is always valid if it leads one to real understanding.
A true philosophy should change our outlook on life forever.
If not, then we haven't understood or it's not a true philosophy.

You've never heard of "Do as I say, not as I do?"

I'm having difficulty seeing how you are unable to make this distinction.

When Alan Watts wrote his books and gave his talks....he was using his reasoning and intelligence to propose a better way of living.

A drunkard can sit down and explain reasons why he shouldn't drink. Those reasons will be true and honest, and he may even believe is own  words...and yet, still the drunkard will drink. Not because his words are false, but because he lacks the will power to stop drinking.

The his words and his actions are disjunctive.

Do as he says, not as he does.

Ah I see.....

Well I never held out any hope of convincing him anyway. It was only mental masturbation.

Got to run to lab!

What's so hard to get about the messenger not being the message?

If he didn't drink would that have made his philosophy more true to you?

Say if Mahatma Gandhi were violent, would that have invalidated the power of non-violence?

If I tell you that you need to change the political system you are a part of because of oppressive tyrants, but I do nothing creative myself to solve the solution, than aren't I sending the message that the action my message preaches isn't really worth pursuing?

You're assuming that sending that message doesn't constitute doing something.

Yes I am.

Sometimes sending a message is enough. Other times the Universe gives us the opportunity to take on more responsibility than that. That's why it was important for these great leaders to live their message - because they had knowledge, and I believe responsibility comes with knowledge.

The best way to live
is to be like water
For water benefits all things
and goes against none of them
It provides for all people
and even cleanses those places
a man is loath to go
In this way it is just like Tao        ~Daodejing
