Shotgun FC light question
    #11217318 - 10/09/09 07:31 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I am building a shotgun FC that will not be exposed to daylight so I have a timer and some daylight CFLs I was going to use.  The FC will be a 16 gallon/ 62 liter container and I am trying to determine what the best amount of watts I should use for the bulb.  I was thinking of one 23 watt CFL in the center or maybe 2 or more lower wattage, 13W maybe.  I also have some PC fans I have already connected to power cables, I was wondering if I should use them or not.  Remember the FC will be in a closet.

A single shotgun? One low-watt CFL is plenty.

But 100x more important that the wattage is the color spectrum temperature. Get the right one!

Another light question. Your going to hear 30 different answers. Some say light doesnt matter all that much. Some with zero experience and alot of reading time will swear by it, though I dont know why. Light initiates pinning and gives the mushrooms direction to grow in. Weather it provides an actual catalyst for a healthy growth is widely argued...

Ive used christmas lights, lights from a lamp to a fluorescent and havent noticed anything worth noting

But you haven't tried the daylight spectrum fluorescent?

You might become a convert.

But, to answer the original question- the lights he's talking about will work, yes?

It is probably the cannabis cultivator in me that wants me to think it matters.  Shrooms are phototropic though to what extent?...  High Output T5s seem like overkill, we know the daylight spectrums (5000K +)are best though.  I was just trying to find out what wattage would be safe without putting too much heat off and provide enough light.  Maybe even a better question would be is a 13W 6500K (daylight) CFL enough for a 16gal/60L shotgun FC?

Thanks!

From RR's video site....

"Experience has taught us that the light best suited for primordia formation and the development of fruitbodies is bright light with a color temperature of 5,000 Kelvin to 7,000 Kelvin."

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek

Personally I use to fluorescent lights in that range. Perfect lighting with no heat and cheap to operate. I am however, looking into LEDs.

I can say that a 9 watt CFL (40 watt incandescent equivalent) lights up a 70 qt mono pretty friggin bright.

My belief is that some strains are more phototropic than others. And even tho that color spectrum may be best for pinning, high intensity halogens can definitely cause phototropism.

The cake in this picture was sitting next to a halogen reading lamp. When the tub got turned, the shrooms changed direction of growth towards it.

Strain was cambo from the hawk.

When I read RR posting that shrooms were deriving energy from light and that he was lighting up all his grows w/ bright light, my first thought was 'Hogwash'.

Then I read up on the studies that have been going on. There is a wide body of research to suggest that mushrooms which contain melanin, absorb energy from light and harness it into building organic molecules. It's not the same mechanism as plant photosynthesis, but it is a form of photosynthesis. It goes against everything we learned growing up in school, but the research is there. Cubes are included in the species of fungi that do this (cept albinos). The exact mechanism is still not known. But a lot of research is coming to the conclusion that shrooms are deriving energy from light. There's also plenty of anecdotal evidence from growers that increased light is improving vigor/yield.

Awesome this alleviates most of my concerns.  Christmas light shrooms?  AWESOME!

Beautiful...so I will plan to use a low wattage 6500K CFL bulb because more wattage = more heat.  Unless somebody would recommend otherwise...

BTW:  I am growing PBs.  First timer and I have read that they are particularly phototropic, any info for or against this point welcome!

Light vs. heat, what is the optimum amount?  Lumens/sq. ft. is what people should be studying on this matter.  There must be a sweet spot...
