Deciding to Quit! (overcoming addictions)
    #11201779 -

Anytime ive ever cut anything out of my life it has never been from a specific moment

In my past i've been addicted to a few things & each of them i swore 'this is the last time' but it never was, id say that phrase hundreds of times but i never followed it through, eventually the habits fell away by themselves...

Never once have i been able to say  'from this day forth i shall never...' and then follow it through

I don't believe the same mind that is addicted can actually cut off the addiciton, because its the one thats addicted!
The cutting off comes from deeper than the mind, from a place where your actual being has just had enough & simply doesn't want it for itself anymore, then the habit just falls away

Obviously ex-smackheads or ex-alcoholics might have a different view, but isn't one of the first 'steps' admitting a higher power & surrendering to that to help you overcome addiciton? Even if they didnt enroll in 12 steps, i bet if they did overcome addiction it was through surrendering to a higher power, not from personal will, and even if it was from personal will, it was only assisted by a higher power

I have gone through a lot of times where I abused a drug for an extended period of time. The only things I considered myself addicted to were cigarettes and pot. I quit those a few years ago.

what I think submitting to a higher power means in this case is:

your first step to recovery to an addiction is admitting you have an addiction right?

so by admitting you have an addiction, you also admit that you feel that you have no control or have lost control over.

by submitting to the higher power, and asking for help you may somehow be able to free yourself of the mental process' that cause the addiction.

everyone doesn't have to agree with each others definition of what the higher power is, the message is still the same..

As an ex-opiate junkie: I was my own higher power. There came a (very low) point where I said to myself "This is fucked up, I need to quit". And that was that, aside from prescribed opiates for surgeries.

I had a girlfriend who was in AA/NA so I went to some meetings. I think it helped some but I saw alot of trading addictions. The illegal ones for sanctioned ones.  Always sugar coffee and cigs at the meetings and always devoured.

She had to villify all drugs and the users so we broke up because I used psychedelics for one thing.

The idea of a higher power screams to me "Jesus saves!".

We are built of the same condensed waves that the entire universe is.

To claim that anything is higher, or lower, than any other piece of this universe is to accept the idea of a magic deity who makes things go "poof!".

Well for folk like me we don't like to believe in magical deities when we believe that the world doesn't work that way. We'd rather muck about in our own private confusion.

Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

He'll never love you, the way that I love you
'Cause if he did, no no, he wouldn't make you cry
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. Wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, now

Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

Listen to me now

He's never near you to comfort and cheer you
When all those sad tears are fallin' baby from your eyes
He might be thrillin' baby but a-my love (my love, my love)
So dog-gone willin'
So kiss him (I wanna see you kiss him. I wanna see you kiss him)
Go on and kiss him goodbye, na-na na-na-na na na

Na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye

[fade in]
Hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
Na na na na, na na na na, hey hey-ey, goodbye
[repeat many times and fade out]

I was a heavy drinker and smoked cigarettes for three years. I quit smoking and drinking for two years now. The best help I got was good weed, and shrooms. I wouldn't smoke for a day, then just repeat it the next day, and the next. I couldn't drink without smoking. Realizing this I quit drinking. After a good introspecting, tripping balls, surrendering to higher powers is easy. I know that others have quit. I always believed what one man can do, another can do. I am very glad I overcame these addictions. My advise to you is to trust yourself. Change the groups of people you socialize with. Make sure that getting clean is number one priority. Out of all the people that are in your life, be good to yourself. Good luck my friend. :mushroom2:

The idea of a higher power screams to me "Jesus saves!".

1)  Apparently, like many (or even most) Christians, you do not grasp the notion of a) a Savior, b) salvation.
Jesus [Iesous] is the best known savior-figure in the West, but that figure has many many iterations, and some are more useful to human development than others. Gnostic Jesus figures are teachers of Knowledge that can liberated human being from the muck of existential confusion, while mainstream Jesus figures effect change (according to theory) from either a single salvific event (the crucifixion-resurrection process) which is a cosmic interface between Eternity and a temporal moment. Or, Jesus as a personification and concentration of Divine Grace continues to effect the believer via "uncreated energy" [grace]. Since the latter two models seem not to have had noticeable effect, but the first model actually has been central to my own personal development, I adhere to the Gnostic version. All versions are not created equal. Practicality rules.

2)  Your notion of "condensed waves" is no more or less scientifically or philosophically respectable than "magic," as I have come to understand magic[k]. If, like A. Crowley's definition of magick as: "Causing change to occur in conformity to one's will," then it is only a matter of an expanded sense of Reality into planes other than the crudest earthbound plane (Malkuth). There seems to be a warp and woof to the fabric of space-time on this planet (everywhere else too, by extension) so that awareness of the 'tides' of force can facilitate change in psychological, social, and parapsychological ways. Parapsychology is the study of paranormal events and their interface with the human mind. There are strictly empirical methods, statistical methods and experimental methods which are indistinguishable from that old fashioned word magic[k].

3)  It is apparent that your spiritual development has not developed in parallel to other vectors of your development. Otherwise, the notion of an Old-Bearded-Guy-in-the-Sky would have perished by the end of childhood, and that version would have been replaced by early, middle, late adolescent versions, plus a young adult version if you're mst your mid 20s. If nothing else, Synchronicities of increasing frequency and a stance of increased compassion would be the accompaniment of increased surrender to transpersonal, transcendental effects in your bio-social-psychological life, had you cultivated the Transcendental Self instead of railing against its Reality. It's a matter of pure experience then (Gnosis), not theory, not faith, and definately not mere belief in a myth sold as history.
