You can find agar many places on the WEB.

try www.agar.net for one. Ebay can possibly be a source for petri dishes and agar in powder or liquid form.

Agar is a growing medium and is mixed with nutrients. The agar itself provides no food for growth, just a semi-solid surface to grow on.

Agar is fun.  You can really get a strong and healty strain up and growing from it if you isolate the strain.  (You don't really need to isolate to strain to get good mushrooms, but its just something lots of folks like to do).   

Let me tell you about agar (since you asked) instead of getting into the methodology of preparing it.

There are a few different kinds of agar, but they basically fall into one of three catagories. 

1. Bacterological Grade Agar - this is agar that is the cream of the crop.  Its generally used in labs and high end applications.

2. Food Grade Agar - I think you know what they use this in...FOOD  :grin:  Everything from Jelly to Chinese Food - yum.

3. Technical Grade Agar - this grade is the lowest and is usually used in applications for industrial uses.  They make hand creams and some molding compounds with it. 

I'd stick with a food grade or a bacteriological grade agar for work with mushroom cultivation.

Remember, those are just 3 basic grades of agar, you can get different cleanliness levels and gelling strenghts for each grade.
