Incubation isn't exactly outdated, it's just that most new growers lack the ability to correctly control the temperature in a heat controlled environment. There's a sweet spot temperature wise in which mycelium will grow at the optimum speed and at the same time preventing the growth of contaminants. Most of the TC's here recommend room temperature as colonization will be slower, but the risk of contams is much lower.

If you don't believe me, go to the #cultivation channel in the shroomery chat and ask around about correct colonization temps. Some of the old hands there get fully colonized grain jars in 10 days when incubating correctly.

I don't doubt a word of it, and wholeheartedly agree. In the scope of a person who is using PF tek and/or purchasing pre-sterilized substrate, I'd say proper temperature control may be out of their ability/monetary constraints.

I personally won't start playing around with incubation until I get a flow hood and agar work started.
