controlling temperature?
    #390893 - 09/10/01 11:48 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Think of this as a poll with no one right answer, everything is a solution in its own right. Post what has worked well for you in the past. Psyke is striving for an automated chamber setup. One that requires minimal interaction with the elves. Humidity will be controlled by an ultrasonic humidifier [shock], but maintaining a constant temperature will be a more difficult problem.
What is the most accurate way to control temperature independently of humidity in a grow chamber?
The method of placing an aquarium heater in a dish of water seems like it would take too long to respond to any change in temperature equilibrium brought on by changing ambient conditions.

A gro-lite will be used for a few hours everyday [psyke hasn't decided exactly how much light it will use]
Psyke has a vision of a grow chamber that is just a giant glove box. This means the chamber may never have to be opened until the harvest. Depending on the size of the chamber two sets of gloves may be needed. This grow chamber will be the ultimate test for contaminants. Best of all everything will be running from electronic timers. This leaves the water capacity of the humudifier as the only limiting factor in the chamber's duration of unassisted operation.

I say your shrooms will do ok with some flucutations in temp. In other words, a constant, set temp is not needed. They certainly don't experience that in nature!

check out mcmans old mushroom cultivator at
www.myco-tek.com/MC/
or search on ebay for a digital thermostate capible of running a heating pad or space heater.
have a good day!

A heating pad, great idea! How would you sterilise this? Chlorinating agents oxidise metal, NaOH will dissolve it, heat will destroy the cable, alcohol won't get into everything. Maybe a combination of treatments are needed?
psyke will check out the link you have posted.

Captainmax: Temperature ranges are quoted for specific stages in mushroom development. Since the grow chamber will be in a closet there is no way to drop the temp to induce fruiting.

the heating pad will be on the outside (underneath) of the terrarium. yeah no apparent need for sterilizing.

psyke- the problem with keeping it in a sealed "glove box" environment is that the fruit produces co2 as it grows. if you have a sealed enviro., there will be no possibility for fresh air and o2- required for healthy growth. the co2 buildup would stunt the crop once it started to pin, if it pinned at all (they need fresh air exchanges to *tell* it to pin...)

unless the humidifier was on the outside of the box, funneling air in and a hole for co2 to be let out near the opposite bottom wall of the box. then- it wouldnt be a sealed enviro., but much like boxes other people use, but with gloves. (contams can come in thru the air pushed into the system, since its sucked in thru the air surrounding the humidifier. it can also come in thru contam'd h20 in the humidifier... kaz' cool mists- they make the vicks model- have a built in filter that filters the air sucked in from the outside, but theyre not like, hepa or anything ::grin:: )

i guess it comes down to where you think contams can come in to your terrarium. if you think its by overhandling of the casings, then sealing the system may be a good thing. but if you also have concerns about the outside air- sealing it may not be worth it. also, youd have to store everything to combat contams in there- such as a h2o2 mister, etc... if you *did* happen to get green.

oh, heating pads are cool but be sure it is safe- people reported setting their closets on fire with a shoddy heating pad.
