bulk grow and pf tek question
    #11170785 -

I know this is a newbie question but Ive been thinking about this for a while. In the PFtek the myc eats up the BRF in order to colonize right? So what does it eat in say a WBS or popcorn grow? Does it eat the substrate nutrients themselves?
I always thought substrate consisted of the thing mycelium grows on and what it eats (eg: it eats brf and grows on verm).

myc eats the grain and grows on it for lack of better words.  The verm in cakes provide minimal nutrition.  I beleive its there to add air and moisture

MYC eats grain.. thats what the BRF is for in the cakes..

the VERM adds moisture but in WBS teks, the grain is hydrated so there is no need for extra water.

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Yeah, but what I was trying to ask is how does the myc get nutrition if theres only wbs in the jar? Or if theres only popcorn in the jar? etc...

WBS and Popcorn are grains and have nutrients in them, I prefer WBS because of the variety of grains

Grains are nutritious. Whole grains especially. Or are you asking a different question?

I am in no condition to debate the philosophical dilemma of trying to analogize whole grain to tacos. It eats it. what?

Grains and rice are both nutritious. Hence the reason both the BRF and grain can be used to grow mycelium.

Grain itself is a nutritious substrate or else it wouldn't be possible to fruit straight grains that only have a non-nutritive casing layer on them.  You're talking about spawning grains to a bulk substrate, which is also nutritious.  Once you've finished this step the grains along with the bulk substrate now both compose what we refer to as the substrate that your mushrooms will fruit from.

Vermiculite is actually nutritious, contrary to what was said above, even though we use it in our non-nutritive casing layers which are applied only to provide a humid micro-climate.  Here is the original vermiculite thread that addresses what iam talking about:
