taking sample from gorw kit
    #11149120 -

hi everyone, i'm a new writer but long time lurker,
i just bought a kit because i'm a noob and didn't want to mess up.
the kit is a plastic box and a filtered bag, no instructions.
my questions are:

1. is this all to do: open the plastic box, put it in the bag and close the bag?
2. should i dunk it ? probably not worth while.
3. can i take samples from the mycelium to propagate in agar and LC?
4. if so should i cut from the corner?
5. will this stunt the mushroom fruiting?
6. will it make it prone to infection?

I have no idea.  www.mushroomvideos.comĀ ;

if you're serious about this hobby, visit that website, it's member RodgerRabbit's DVD on how to cultivate, there's the pf-tek which is the most basic on that site for free.

I highly, HIGHLY recommend buying his full DVD so you don't have to waste countless hours sifting through bullshit on this site possibly finding wrong information. I bought it last christmas, he anwsered like one question I had about the dvd, and I went from growing these guys:
like this:

to THESE GUYS

like this!

I do more advertising for that video then anyone, it really was worth every penny.

hey thanks for answering but i've already seen those vids, they're great!
it's just that my questions are more specific and uncovered in that video...
i had no idea that RodgerRabbit was the vids protagonist btw, LOL!

ahhhhh ok so i bought a kit because i want a bunch of shrooms without waiting 2 full moons, will someone give some useful insight please!?!

if you read carefully you will notice i'm actually trying to grow my own by cloning the kit. so please give me your insight regarding this being dangerous or harming the mycelium

Everyone above IS giving you good info believe it or not.

1. is this all to do: open the plastic box, put it in the bag and close the bag?

You can inoculate a bag many different ways. If you use a syringe then you can do it out in the open air, just use sterile technique. Inject through the bag/inoculation point.

You can make a liquid culture and inoculate the bag in the open air using a syringe. Just use sterile technique. Inject through the bag/inoculation point.

You can open the bag inside of a glove box, but you'll need some MYC to drop in there.

2. should i dunk it ? probably not worth while.

I can't imagine why you would dunk a bag of colonized substrate. What do you plan to do with it? Do you plan on spawning it to a bulk substrate?

3. can i take samples from the mycelium to propagate in agar and LC?

Absolutely. Any growth will inoculate anything.

4. if so should i cut from the corner?

Cut from the corner of what?

5. will this stunt the mushroom fruiting?

Are you asking if grabbing a hunk of MYC from a fully colonized bag of substrate will harm fruiting? No, it wouldn't, but you should still do this inside of a glove box. You want to make sure that you do not contaminate what you are trying to inoculate.

6. will it make it prone to infection?

Grabbing a hunk of MYC from a fully colonized bag of substrate out in the open air and dropping onto some agar would likely contam the agar. Anything you inoculate by opening sterile containers should be done in at least a glove box.

thanks that's great advice, sorry i didn't explain i see there are different kind of kits:

mine is a cake inside a plastic box: fully colonized.
it includes a plastic bag with a filter.

i imagine the box is to be opened and then inserted into the bag, which then should be closed.

Usually people inoculate a jar/cake, allow it to become fully colonized, then they birth it/remove it from the jar. They then dunk it in water for approx 24 hrs, roll it in vermiculite, mist it, and place it inside of a fruiting chamber.

This is why some kits are just not ideal. Many kits are something people sell ... not something to buy.

Sounds to me like all you need is a FC (fruiting chamber).

No No to me that sounds like a casing kit. you take your stuff from your bag and put it in the Box. Maybe if you took a picture of your kit people could be more helpful.

ok so there is the plastic box and the bag.
i assume the box is supposed to be oppened and put into the bag which will later be closed.
i also intend in taking a sample and put it on agar.

I'm not 100% because I'm still new at this but looks like they gave you a casing kit. I where supposed to use the bag to colonize the Rye (w.e you where supposed to inoc) then case it at the bottom.

With that I would Pasteurize some Jiffy Mix (50/50 Peat Moss/Vermiculite), Open your box, put the Jiffy Mix on top, put the lid back on, put it back into the incubator to let it colonize through the Jiffy. Then you could either open it again and put the bag over it for a small FC or make a Shotgun Fruiting Chamber.

That is my uneducated guess.

ddreamer,

Was there a jar at any time throughout this grow or did you inoculate this tray? What did this tray contain?

Usually people inoculate a sterilized jar through the lid in a sterile manor. Once the jar is partially colonized they typically shake the shit out of the jar. Once the jar has become fully colonized there are no worries about contam. This jar is referred to as your 'grain spawn'. Now most people shake up this jar and mix it with a bulk substrate (like pasteurized poo, straw, coir, etc...) put it into a tray, and let it sit to until it is fully colonized. This is referred to as 'spawning' to a bulk substrate. Once fully colonized, you can 'case' it or not case it. If you want to case it then you would put a non-nutritive material over top (like peat moss/verm/lime) and then it will fruit.

no, the kit cam as i just showed, fully inoculated.
i guess they sell em this way in europe mostly.

and yes, i do intend to take a sample to inoculate agar and LC.
with those i'll experiment with PFs and grain.

will taking small samples from the cake stunt the growth or make it prone to contams ?

Is this an edible mushroom kit?

If it was pre-inoculated then that would be illegal in the US. Only spores are legal in the US. That is why I was confused as to how this kit was inoculated. Typically kits come with sterile jars of grains or BRF cakes.

I have no idea what your tray contains, but I assume that you are supposed to fruit from inside that bag (the bag being your fruiting chamber). I don't know.

I highly doubt that this tray of yours is sterile so risk of contam will likely be higher if you snag a hunk of MYC for inoculating a LC. You can do it, but the risk will be higher than if you snagged a hunk of MYC from a sterile jar of 'grain spawn' and dropped it into a sterile LC while inside of a glove box.
