Do I need any light for my colonizing jars?
    #11146227 -

I heard that you put your colonizing jars in a dark place but I heard from others saying that you need to give it like 4 hr of light each day, so which one is correct?

it doesn't really matter either or.

some say it will pin faster if exposed to light, personally I keep mine in a drawer.

lol who ever said you need light for colonizing doesn't know what he is talking about.
you need no light during colonizing.

But, it wont hurt.

Do a test put half in complete dark and half in the light and report your findings back here.

Supposedly minimal direct sunlight can aid in the myc colonizing slightly faster, but I feel that this only may be b/c the light is slightly elevating the temp of the jar to a degree or 2 above otherwise. It's my belief that pinning is easier when the jars have been colonized in darkness b/c the myc uses a sudden increase in light and a decrease in CO2 to trigger the pinning phase.

TYPO: "indirect sunlight" -- never expose your jars to direct sunlight  :slowtard:

Actually RR gave the advice to expose stubborn cakes to a few minutes of direct sunlight a day to coax them into pinning. anymore than a few minutes probably isnt good tho.

i started doing it and have actually noticed quite an increase in pinning..

in the morning when i wake up i line my cakes up on the window sil mist and mix my perlite around and put the cakes back in.. then later before i go to bed i mist again with the cakes in the FC seems to be working

Never heard that but I suppose it would work. I've only heard RR say that pinning is triggered by lighting shift which is why I try to ensure that the shift is as dramatic as possible. I got from 3wks complete darkness to 12hr of light when I birth mine.

Light is a secondary pinning mechanism, therefore light will not hurt or help mycelium in any way.  It will not directly cause fruitbody formation.

Conditions for which the mycelium will start developing fruitbodies is when

A: the mycelium has fully colonized the substrate or
B: contamination occurs.

that is arguable

heres what he said

You want very bright light.  Sometimes you can coax stubborn cakes into fruiting by misting well, and then giving five or so minutes of direct sunlight.  If you'll do that for a couple of days in a row, you'll probably see pins.
