the fragile
    #11108446 -

I noticed these "Fragile brittlegills" / russula fragilis growing in a newly sodded lawn near my home. The caps of these all have bright red tops. However, I noticed a group of brittlegills with green tops growing a few hundred yards away in a nearby forest about a month earlier. I wonder if the color is determined genetically, or whether some environmental condition influences color. for example, could the measure of sunlight, nutrient levels or water content bias russulas towards different colors? just curious.

For the most part it's different species =different colors. In northeastern North America we have over 70 species of "red russulas".
There are over 15 species of the green cracked cap russulas (R. virescens/crustosa group) in NA. you could go on and on with this...

Yours is nothing like R. fragilis, it's probably in the pseudolepida group...
