I thought I had done a fair amount of reading on the subject and that growing shrooms would be a snap.  But I think I’m running into some problems.  I purchased a mushroom growing kit (the one found at this
mushbox, because it had pre sterilized substrate jars and anything else that I thought I would need to get started.  I purchased two 10 ml syringes of Cambodian psyilsibe cubensis spores
  I only used six substrate jars and one syringe—leaving me with six substrate jars and one more syringe (just in case I really screwed up my first attempt).

I started off using the directions that came with the mushroom kit (instead of the information on this website).  I use an alcohol swab to clean the needle and a flame between inoculation of each substrate jar…  Then I was instructed to set up an incubator (that was supposed to stay around 85°) to let the myceilium grow.  I’ve read a lot of stuff about growing these types of mushrooms, but nothing I have ever read said you had to incubate the jars—they just needed to be in a dark place.  I incubated them for about a week and a half, but all I really see in the jar is condensation.  The container that I have the jars in smells bad…  My roommate says they smell like rotting cantaloupe. 

When inoculating the jars we did our best to keep a sterile environment.  Should the substrate jars smell?  I mean, it is a fungus.  Do the Cambodian strain just need more heat?  I’m not really sure what to do…  Should I buy another strain?  Something easier?  Should I start over?  I’m at a loss.

those are the worst vendors ever.  And you got outdated wrong info.  Dont use an incubator unless you want contams,  dont need to store them in the dark, out on a counter is perfect.  Temps over 83 will cause your mycl to slow down, not speed up the process.  Ideal temp is in the mid 70's.  Next time order from a vendor from this site and read all the info from the link in my sig.

Buy from this site like others suggested.

When innoculating keep a sterile enviornment odviously, keep the tops of the lids open as little as possible, should be odvious.

I wouldn't smell your next batch cause it could end up killing you like curiousity killed the cat. Just watch them, if its not turning white well.. it's not right :P

Flush them down the toilet.

one of the reasons we encourage people to use our vendors is because we
hold them to the highest of standards, our vendors make good on their
products/promises, when they dont, they dont remain as vendors

anything other than a mushroomy smell is a bad sign, rotting fruits,
dirty socks, that weird kid from middle school... it's an indicator that
they need to be tossed out

try re sterilizing the remaining 6 jars in case the contams were not
from the syringe or your procedures, you dont really want them sitting
around anyway for an extended period before inoculation, make use of the
jars that you empty if you can find vermiculite in your area and use the
PF tek for simple minds, dont make anything more complicated than it has to be

7-10 days depending on how the mods feel today + if the moon is in the 2nd trimester with venus. check your charts, and report back.

In my opinion, I just think there is no pride in some of these people... no one takes pride in learning anymore. I am 26 and hated school and reading, but things that interest me I want to learn about. I would assume others who have a passion for wanting to grow would do the same. I guess I am wrong, but whatever... I am sorry for writing in this thread.

I inoculated my jars on Monday, and it's been nearly a week, and I see nothing.  I was thinking the room temp was just too cold, 63-65ish (I keep the apartment kinda chilly).  I am trying to get the heat up a bit-- but is it too late even though I've seen no results this far along?  Any advice would be great!

Almost a week is not long at all. Use the search engine and read up on what your doing!

That is a good indication that you have not done enough reading, or I have a Nigerian cousin who would like some help getting a large sum of money in to the U.S.; you're pick.

Quite honestly, you just blew $100 on $20 worth of materials and a few hours of work. I wouldn't trust those jars for anything besides failed grows.

I would never purchase 'pre-sterilized' anything from anywhere. How in the hell do you know that it was actually sterilized? If its not, who are you going to complain to, the BBB?

Even if they were sterilized, how long were they stored before shipping? How are you going to ensure the proper moisture content? There is so much shit that can go wrong up to the point of shooting spores, I wouldn't trust my grandmother to not fuck it up. Hell, I don't trust myself not to fuck it up, but I'm all I got.

This is a simple question with a very complex answer. Easiest being, keep everything that the mushies won't eat. You payed over inflated prices for a few totes and some jars, might as well get the best out of them. The syringes may or may not be viable, perhaps running a bit of LC will clear that up.

The question that needs to be answered is "how much money and time are you willing to accomplish your goals, and what are those goals"?

For another $20-$30 and 10-20 hrs, you can get a nice PF set running and have some fruits inside 2 months. For $100-200 and nominally more work, you can be running a years supply within that same time frame.

Either way, you're gonna have to do a bit more reading, holmes.

Not to go on a tirade about the non-sponsored vendor or anything... Wait, that is the entire point of this post...

Looking over at their 'glovebox', the markup is huge for something that I sure as hell wouldn't use. I would like to go over the list of components:

1x tote ($10)
1x PC fan ($10)
1x filter disk (>$1)
1x pair of aqua-gloves ($15)
1x DC converter ($10)
1x procedure of inviting contams into your grow (Priceless)

Maybe I'm not very trustworthy, but for some reason using a filter disk as a replacement to a hepa filter isn't sufficient. Especially when it is vastly apparent that you don't have any sort of air-tight seal between your filter and fan. Eh?

Will a filter disk keep spores from landing on your jars and falling into your sub? Sure. Will they still hold up when you are forcing air through them (effectivly trying to push contams through the filter). I highly doubt it.

HOLY SHIT! You're selling me a BOX AND A FAN?!?! NO WAY!

While the idea of having a sterile air-flow for positive pressure to keep contams out, making a still air box is just as effective (more so than if used with an inadequate filter). Worried about contams enterting beore you get your arms in there? Try some ziplock bags taped on the inside as arm-hole covers.

I built a still air box for around $12, or I could build a laminar flow hood for somewhere around $200-250. Why would I spend $100+ on something that I could build as good (if not better) for 10%, or something VASTLY superior for a little more than twice that?
