Can someone kind of explain a bit better what the hell the galactic center is and if we really have anything to worry about?

We're 30,000 light years away from the center of the galaxy.  Even if something catastrophic happens at the center of the galaxy at this very moment it won't affect us for another 30,000 years.  We should be more worried about the 10 trillion dollar debt that our country has accumulated over the years.

I take it your concern arises from a common misinterpretation of the Mayan calendar.  The 2012 date does indeed correlate with the galactic center, otherwise known as the "Dark Rift."  But some misinterpret this to mean that on 2012 the solar system will actually cross the galactic equator and be subjected to increased levels of radiation.  This misunderstanding is so common that even the History Channel reported it as such.  In matter of fact, the 2012 date has more to do with the relative position of the sunrise to the Dark Rift as seen from Earth.  It's about the precession of equinoxes, not the much longer cycle of our solar system going above and below the galactic equator.

:facepalm: i thought all the 2012 stuff was entertaining when i first heard about it years ago. but i can't wait for 2012 to come now so i can stop hearing about it. the only thing that is happening that year is a shitload of great looking movies are coming out of hollywood!

Couldn't of something have happened 29,999 years ago and we won't know about it till it hits us? This assumed said catastrophe is traveling at the speed of light.

There's a few more end dates that we still have to cross.  I've heard 2020 brought up by some.  And Isaac Newton calculated that the apocalypse would happen sometime around 2060.
