how do you know the inside of a substrate is not contamed

I was just thinking that when you use a none transparent container for your substrate how would you be shure the inside is not contaminated. I have read many times to sprinkle your grain on top and through out. but is it not possible the middle is infected and the shrooms that grow could be as well. Any way just a question I had and thought I would throw it out here for some feed back. Also The reason I am asking is because I used a glass cake pan and found one corner contamed with bacteria so I threw it out because I could see it.

Any mushrooms that grow are still edible.

I thought that if it was contamed it could contam the shroowms as well but I guess that was just some ones opinion

Nah. I wouldn't make prints with them, but they are safe to eat.

But you still can't be sure the inside of a bulk tub isn't contaminated until you cut it in half.

awsome idea that pretty much answers my question. I pry will when my first ones get done flushing. I was going to dig a hole out side and throw the whole thing in there with some straw but two halves is just as good.

Why wouldnt you want to make prints with them if they are safe to eat?

I guess it depends on what you consider safe to eat.
Mold on a corner of a tub isn't going to hurt edibility of the rest of the mushrooms any more than mold on the corner of a block of cheese keeps you from eating the rest of the cheese.
But there's a whole lot of spores in the area, the prints would all be contaminated.

I feel so in lightened. You make perfect seance. I almost feel like these are no brain er questions I am asking after you give such great responses. Although a cant help but to fear contamination after all the threads I have read where the only response is throw them out.

We say to throw them out for the same reason.  You don't want those contaminant spores flying all over your grow room.  The mushrooms are still fine to eat though.  Fungi doesn't conduct substrate contaminants into the fruits.  Besides, bacteria on a bulk substrate is perfectly fine and actually desired. It's molds we toss out, after harvesting any fruits. Don't sprinkle grains on top of a bulk substrate.  Be sure to mix or cover them with manure or coir, straw, etc.
