Hello all, new and need help. A friend of mine got some of those pre-sterilized substrate filled bags and inoculated them with PB strain, all went well for several weeks and colonization was almost 80%. The bags were checked daily (there were 4 bags taped to a heavy hanger so they could be hung easily in one place), they were bumped around a bit when being checked, but nothing radical. One day he noticed one of the bags with a bluish/turquoise growth, so that bag was trashed. The second and third bag rapidly developed the same problem. He smashed the substrate inside(without opening the bag), and found the blue inside as well. To the trash it went. The fourth and final bag developed the same problem, the substrate was smashed into marble size pieces and the bag hung back up. He now has a substrate bag full of small shrooms one week later, and the bluish/turquoise resembles chunks like in blue cheese dressing. There is a very pleasant mushroomy smell emitting from the bag. Is this contam or just bruising, as I suspect the other three bags had the same problem and maybe weren't bad at all. How does he know for sure? Doesn't green mold smell nasty? Could he open the bag, carefully, and check it with a Q-tip and H2O2 to see if it rubs off on the Q-tip. Please help. Tankhead
Do the Q tip thing. I believ you just threw some good substrate in the trash. If you handle the bags daily, it's normal that the pressure will bruise the substrate. No pain, no gain or ask first if you're unsure.
I did the Q tip test and it just made the bluish more blue,NO color came off .I taped the bag shut and wiped it off with H2o2.The smell in the bag was very shroomy. Thanks for the help..All should be well i hope... any other opinions would be welcome. You are good people!!!thanks again tankhead
