Any mechanics here? car issue
    #11072225 -

98 chevy malibu, v6, 3.1L

my fuel pump doesn't want to pump fuel anymore, however it is not broken. we have found that the fuel pump relay switch is not engaging upon ignition or when the key is in the on position. However if the key in the on position and we manually force the relay switch to make contact, the fuel pump works and we get fuel pressure.

so for the time being weve jury-rigged the switch so that it is always hot as long as the key is in the on position. id rather not have to do this, because now my car will always be pumping fuel as long as the key is in the ignition and turned. any ideas on what else could be causing the switch not to engage normally?

Is the relay getting voltage?  If so, then it is probably burned out.  If it is not getting voltage check the fuses.  Otherwise, you have to probe the circuit to find out where the voltage is leaking.

Check your AC compressor fuse? See diagram.

Take the relay out, you should have two grounds, and two hot. Two pair then, one ground and one b+ to turn on the coil in the relay, then one ground and one b+ to supply voltage to the contacts. Im asuming you have taken the plastic shell off the relay, your going to need a meter or a Power Probe at this point.

Step A Unplug the vacuum line from Fuel Pressure Regulator(its on the rail with yer injectors)
Step 1 Check continuity of relay coil
Step 2 If coil is good, B+ or ground is missing(This could be due to PCM not switching relay on)

Thats it, because if you can force the contacts and get fuel pressure you have supply voltage, which is also the circuit you would fuse cause it runs the pump.

id rather not have to do this

If you wreck it PCM wont cut the pump, danger will robinson

Edit Forgot step A
